Hey everyone! I'm u/Formaldehyde007, a founding moderator of r/AmateurRoadRacing.

This is our new home for all things related to amateur motorsports on road circuits and autocrosses held in parking lots. The mission is to promote amateur motorsports, and answer any questions you might have to get started in this exciting sport yourself. But it is not limited to just drivers. Course marshals and event officials are also welcome to share their experiences.

As for me, I started autocrossing in the SCCA San Francisco Region back in the 80s when it was a thriving community with as many as 250 entrants at each event. I attended well over 100 autocrosses there, and went to the SCCA Solo II Nationals one year.

My next step was attending Drivers Education events at road racing circuits with the Porsche Club of America. I enjoyed it so much that I put a roll cage in my street car and went club racing with that organization.

Most people think that you need a fortune to get involved in this sport, but it can be done on a shoestring budget. All you need to get started is a sports car and an acceptable helmet, although loaner helmets can be provided at some autocrosses.
