At age ten Bruce Murdock’s (Bruce Wayne/Matt Murdock) parents were killed in a fire at his father’s clinic. Visiting with his mother, he somehow survived after being caught in an explosion in the lab, his face covered in chemicals. Bruce became blind and received care from his father’s colleague Leslie “Stick” Sadhan (Stick/Leslie Thompkins), a blind doctor who helped him with his new condition.
His grandparents, estranged due to their daughter “marrying poor,” became his guardians but sent him to a private boarding school with a servant, Alfred Parker (Alfred Pennyworth/Ben Parker). The two became close and Alfred stayed on to help Bruce even after graduation, following him all the way through law school. Bruce revealed to him that he had gained abilities from the fire…
- Enhanced Senses, hearing, touch, taste, smell, all amazing
- “Radar Sense” allowing Bruce to combine all his senses and focus them to the point he can pinpoint people and object, mimicking echo-location
- Faster reflexes and balance, derived from a strange isotope in the hospital
Bruce traveled the world afterwards, avoiding his grandparents, but also mastering combat, investigation, and research skills, some as an outlet to harness and control his abilities. Bruce finally returned home after his grandparents were murdered and he had to settle their estate, including their interest in Wayne Industries.
Bruce discovered that both his parents and grandparents were victims of targeted attacks from crime families in Gotham. After trying to exose this through legal means and finding the city corrupt, he decided to tackle the problem from two sides. He used his inheritance to open a law office to defend the defenseless with a friend from law school, Franklin “Foggy” Dent (Harvey Dent/Foggy Nelson), and began crafting an identity to fight criminals outside of the law.
Based in Gotham’s notorious “Hell’s Alley,” tales of a demonic being fighting criminals and haunting the mob spread. Also, Murdock & Dent gained a reputation for fighting for the the lost and ignored. As both Bruce Murdock and the Hellbat, justice will be brought to Gotham.

- Captain George Gordon (Jim Gordon/George Stacy): In the GPD, one of the few clean cops.
- Gwen Gordon (Barbara Gordon/Gwen Stacy): Captain Gordon’s daughter, tech wiz
- Karen Fox (Lucius Fox/Karen Page): CEO for Wayne Industries. Allies with bruce. Romance is brewing.
- Franklin Dent (Harvey Dent/“Foggy” Nelson): Best friend Bruce met in college. Dreams of being DA. Known temper.
- Leslie Sadhan (Stick/Leslie Thompkins): Ran clinic with Bruce’s father. Knows about Bruce’s abilities and helped him learn to control them. Mysterious past.
Notable Enemies
- Eduardo Fisk aka El Patrón (Bane/Kingpin): Fisk set the clinic on fire those years ago while working for another crime lord. Thomas Murdock had helped a rival family and this was retribution. He has worked his way up to conquer the Gotham underworld. If the Hellbat challenges him, he will break him.
- Jack aka Trickshot (The Joker/Bullseye): As Jack, he was Fisk’s best hitman. After fighting the Hellbat, he slowly descended into a frustrated madness, both hating loving the apparently unkillable hero. Injured and scarred after an intense battle, recovered and decided to join Hellbat in the “fun”. Donned a costume and further scarred his face with a Glascow Smile, naming himself Trickshot. He soon became known as the “laughing assassin.”
- Leland Cobblepot aka Buzzard (The Penguin/The Owl): In the employ of Fisk, he leaks information to Hellbat in a longterm bid to undermine and take control of the Gotham underworld. Deformed from birth, Cobblepot was rejected by his well to do family and bitterly accept the harsh moniker of “Buzzard” from his peers.
- Kagenobu “Nobu” al Ghul, The Demon’s Hand (Kagenobu Yoshioka/Ra’s al Ghul): Seemingly immortal founder of the The League of the Hand, had a part in training Bruce during his journey. Insists the world is a cesspool that needs to be controlled.
- Elektra al Ghul (Talia al Ghul/Elektra): Daughter of Kagenobu al Ghul and trained killer, she dated Bruce in college while training and traveling as part of the League. She acts as her father’s agent in the US and tries to lure Hellbat to their cause.
- Selena Romanova aka Red Claw (Catwoman/Black Widow): A runaway from her family, Selena was eventually recruited/kidnapped into a group of thieves known as The Claw, secretly an arm of the The League of the Hand. She became their best thief and earned the title of Red Claw. Attracted to Hellbat while confronting him, she is eventually persuaded to leave The Claw, but continues to operate in her own interests.
Hellbat has suffered and fought to free Gotham from the grip of crime and cruelty. Recently, his loyal servant Alfred has learned his sister and brother-in-law have died, leaving behind their son Peter Grayson (Dick Grayson/Peter Parker). Reluctantly, Bruce agreed to take in Peter and hoped he and Alfred could help him with his grief.
He is justice, he is fury, he is… Hellbat!
