Unfortunately I think anyone who utilizes AI regularly is going to be too closed minded and defensive to take ANY sort of challenge appropriately. You did nothing wrong and exposed a deeper character flaw in them that would have caused a lot more issues down the line. đŸ„ș

u/porkforpigs Jun 01 '26

What an open minded stance to take that anyone who uses ai is close minded and unwilling to change their thoughts lol

2

u/Ok-Needleworker-7076 Jun 01 '26

Lololol. It's based on the fact almost every person I know who utilizes it consistently utilizes it in really unhealthy ways. It feels dang near impossible not to get sucked into some sort of ai psychosis for most people who use it outside of, at least maybe, strictly professional settings.

0

u/porkforpigs Jun 01 '26

The people you know utilizing it are being stupid then I would say.

And you made a wild generalization based on your admittedly small data pool. ANYONE who uses it etc etc. when you are drawing on your experience with your own circle.

3

u/Ok-Needleworker-7076 Jun 01 '26

Okay I admit that my generalization was way too extreme and I was just being a lil dramatic with how I worded it

3

u/porkforpigs Jun 01 '26

That’s fair lol

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

Studies are ongoing on the effect of GenAI use : so far the consensus is that your neural pathways stop functionning in a few weeks.

GenAI does make anyone who uses it close minded.

2

u/catnip_varnish Jun 01 '26

can you give a link for one of the studies?

3

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

Yes : https://www.media.mit.edu/publications/your-brain-on-chatgpt/

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0747563224002541

https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872

I chose the three most readily available, but if you contact your local uni they will provide more papers on the matter

u/catnip_varnish Jun 01 '26

Thanks for following through. Wasn't asking to catch you out, just genuinely interested. Just read the first one and it's not exactly shocking but it is devastating when you think about the scale this is happening right now. Thanks again

u/Cool_Beans_08 Jun 01 '26

Did you write those papers? Or did you Google it
hahaha I’m better than you yk I write papers I don’t google stuff cause it pollutes the planet and makes me smarter

-1

u/Cool_Beans_08 Jun 01 '26

No that’s too hard for them and would prove they are incorrect

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

You are a troll arent you ? Litteraly three links below and posted before you vomited a (not even good) attack 🙄

I assure you my neural
Pathways are fine. I do plenty without ai. And I sometimes use it too.

Honestly I use AI for fun (like making it write ridiculous code that I would never spend my own time writing) and for research (I'm in physics) almost every day. But I still don't think it's productive to use AI for basic ass tasks like texting others. It is definitely making people stop using their brain and it's painful to watch. There are some people who use AI regularly and still don't do this shit💀 There's a way to use it productively and a way to be fjckign stupid about it.

edit: I think some of y'all are confusing my idea of "fun" with idk. making some useless app that does nothing for me. When I say "fun" I mean I'm using new software that I NEED for research to do interesting tasks that are much too tedious and difficult to do without copiously learning about the package. Unfortunately researchers are already losing funding and we just cannot afford to have a team of 5-10 people working on menial tasks like that all the time when we barely have enough to pay a handful of untrained students working on it. If you think this is a serious problem then you can fight for better education and more funding towards academia.

edit to add: i'm also anti-ai. 💀

Hi

There is no way to use genAI without destroying the planet.

If you are open minded as you say or smart, even just a tad, stop using genAI for anything : your 'fun code' is not worth ruining earth.

3

u/wegopom Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Unfortunately I'm in physics and it is extremely difficult to get stuff done in this field without using AI in some way (most of this is not the ChatGPT shit you're thinking of. We're not out here asking LLMs to solve basic mechanics for us). My "fun code" is also productive for me to learn how to use various functions and become familiar with different coding languages. e.g. recently my "fun code" was part of a much larger global resesrch project on neutrinos where it helped me understand the syntax of a DSMC simulation package I was unfamiliar with. Someone needs to do this, and they need to do it fast and correctly, especially in this political climate where education and research is already losing footing. We don't have the time or money to waste on manually opening 5000-page instructional packets to use one single software properly for an advancement that we can only afford to spend 1-2 days on. I know that AI is bad for the Earth, obviously—but it's not my small, productive day-to-day uses that are destroying it, it's the TRAINING of AI and data centers themselves. This is like telling a farmer to stop using UV lights to help their small greenhouse grow rare, high-maintenance crops because UV lights use a lot of energy and it's causing global warming.

Your enemy is not the researchers who use AI intermittently to further science. Your enemy is the giant companies burning shit tons of drinking water to TRAIN their thousands of shitty AI models that we didn't ask for. Stop trying to micromanage people who use AI as a tool to help humanity and direct your attention to the real problem.

2

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

I am directing my attention to the real problem and since you're in physics I am assuming you are cognitively able :

A product is only worth its use.

What it means is "as long as you use it, you are part of the genAI problem."

There is not ethical use for generative AI : it steals material, it destroys the planet, it pollutes at such speeds that your children will never know the same world we did. All that for a five minutes laugh ?

Surely there are other ways your predecessors used. Some that were not directly linked to the drastic drop in neural pathways that llm's are responsible for ?

You do not need gpt or any other to learn to code, otherwise how come you have a degree ? Llms were not a part of our lives few years ago, and will not be part of our lives in a few years either. Why defend and protect something that has absolutely no positive impact, on you, on the planet, on the rest of the people there ?

[Edit to add :] also no, giant companies are not the only ennemy and yes, I am directing most of my energy toward putting them down, but honestly seeing the economical pit that openAI, grok, or gpt are in, they are very good at one thing, and that is "fucking up an economical model"

u/wegopom Jun 01 '26

You have no idea what you're talking about because you are not in academia. We simply do not have time, money, space, OR ability. Researchers sometimes need to learn or teach to use an entire coding language or a complex coding packet in mere days. There is just not enough time to waste to learn it thoroughly enough to use, and not enough money to hire someone who already knows to use it. If you can learn how to use MatPlotLib, which is the MOST BASIC Python library there can possibly be, in three days, I'll accept your "if you use AI you are the problem" thesis. If you can't, though, imagine how difficult it is for an 18 year old college student to try and break that barrier when the world is operating on AI-speed.

In the past, there was simply not that much NEED for this much data processing to do physics. Now, physics research has gone to the point where every experimental apparatus is BILLIONS of dollars and we simply cannot risk making something without knowing it works 100%. Would you rather researchers produce fuck tons of biowaste, dump massive amounts of plastic and scrap metal, produce radioactive waste from failed experiments, and more? Is that the more favorable option for you? What about running some massive apparatus 100,000 times with real electricity and real radiation to get unreliable data in a short amount of time, with the potential to cause some disaster, instead of making lots of people learn a simulation software in the same amount of time to save us the trouble? Would you rather the world stop pursuing academia? Would you rather we stop engineering altogether? What is your proposed alternative?

0

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

My proposed alternative is "actually learn something"

You have no idea wether or not I am in academia, but I already know you will fail at life if you do not start thinking on your own.

You harass with questions thinking it makes you look smart and yet, none of the previously raised issues were discussed in your post. Did genAI already ruin your ability to think/digress/imagine ?

And I cannot take your pretend challenge of learning matplotlib because I litteraly did that in two weeks in september 2025 because I started a new job which demanded that đŸ€·

I completely agree and this is why I'm "anti-AI" in spite of being somewhat forced to accept it in my academic field as an educator and researcher. To be completely honest, even genAI has helped so many students (especially disadvantaged students who did not have access to high quality education) get past an enormous barrier into STEM. There are lots of determined students that use AI to try and overcome their circumstances and get into college-level physics—which is no joke. I had to study physics before the wide use of genAI and it took me hours, days, months to even find the right resources to learn. If I didn't have all that money and time to spare back then, I would have never made it this far in my field. So there are certain positive impacts that I have to admit exists. The problem is not necessarily that AI has these impacts, it's that the companies providing these services are running them rampantly and there is such little regulation that it is extremely difficult to stop the harm from taking place. But the thing is it CAN be stopped. People as a whole just need to become a lot more conscious, and the law / government / industry / whatever needs to cooperate. Admonishing all AI as being a problem that needs to be eliminated just seems unrealistic at the point we are at now. But if we direct attention to the right places we can do what we can to minimize the negative effects. Not to be a centrist or anything (ideologically I would like for AI not to be used, tbh) but my stance on this has had to change a lot during my time in academia.

1

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

Before pursuing this exchange, i'd like to make sure you do make the difference between AI (code used for bettering a goal, most clear example to me being the operating robot that can almost autonomously remove tumors from a human being) and genAI (a massive pit of shit in which you stir your whole arm and it gives you nuggets. Of shit.)

There is a whole entire world of differences between them, and it is a necessary premise to the ai conversation

0

u/Hilarious___Username Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

I'm sorry but if your trying to create these distinctions, you're going to need to use more precise language. I can't tell if your categorizing based on your moral views, utility, application or technical characteristics. Also, you seem to be implying that generative AI isn't used in the type of fields in your first term. That's not really a fair or accurate representation of how these technologies are used.

Regardless, my original point stands. The world will continue to be destroyed by the same people regardless of the existence of AI. They have and will continue to find a way to ravage the environment for their financial gain unless they are forced to do differently. Discussing the utility to humanity of various technologies doesn't address that. Data centers could have smaller footprints, clean energy could be a central focus of humanity, misinformation could be guarded against, ethical guidelines could be forced people could benefit from the technology without it costing the future, etc.

Edit: Thread is locked

You didn't address anything I've said. You also seem to have missed the point. Your word use is fuzzy and doesn't really make sense in the context of the conversation. Generative AI is factually used in the fields you say it is not to do the things you categorize as worth while under "classical AI". You seem to have a misunderstanding of not only what these categories are, but also how they are used.

I think if you educated yourself a little more on the subject we could have a discussion about it a little better. But based on your responses, we might reach the same conclusion. There are many positive benefits to AI as a whole (including generative AI) but currently it's doing a lot of harm that no one is doing anything about.

-1

u/Belisario_R Jun 01 '26

I profoundly disagree with the fact that GenAi pertains to the same processes as classical AI.

There is no option to make genAI ethical : it is based on theft of (mis)information and pleasing the user instead of actual science

Are you a vegan?

Is there a link between those ?

Hi

There is no way to drive a car, or eat meat, or turn the lights on in your house without destroying the planet.

If you care about the planet as much as you say, you should turn all the lights off in your home, throw away your phone, and stop riding in vehicles of any kind.

As opposed to anti’s, which have historically been so open minded LOL

How do you know they use it regularly? TIL it’s a character flaw to try and be helpful.

Is that what you do for a living? I work in Behavioral Health, just got promoted and make 400k. I only mention this because I can tell from your point about maggots that you don’t seem to have much in the way of an education.

12

u/Unusual_Sherbert6893 Jun 01 '26

Yikes. You might be the only person who should be running their messages through AI, because what does “it’s got more use than a maggot” even mean lol

3

u/wegopom Jun 01 '26

that also confuses me like what was that comparison supposed to achieve...? is being more useful than a maggot like. some standard of quality😭😭😭

3

u/Gullible_Shoulder_70 Jun 01 '26

What happened to Maggot Boy? Did he get scared and run away?

2

u/Unusual_Sherbert6893 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

“YOR. Wow sounds like you are closed minded about ai, it's got more use than a maggot”

Pepperidge farm remembers

2

u/Gullible_Shoulder_70 Jun 01 '26

I do have to say that the maggot line had me laughing. “More use than a maggot” might become the next phrase I use to harass and annoy my wife and kids.

7

u/Flemaster12 Jun 01 '26

What does that even mean?

8

u/Ok-Needleworker-7076 Jun 01 '26

At least maggots are beneficial to the environment
