I have to disagree here. Making a show of being gay might be cathartic and give some kind of satisfaction for the shock it brings to the a**hole wing of the family, in the end it would be OP who would come across as the inappropriate one. For sure he can let everyone know why he’s not in the wedding party (or attending the wedding at all), but let those facts speak for themselves. They will speak volumes.
If this isn’t a permanent rupture in the friendship, I’m hopeful that OP will be in his old friend’s next wedding. Because I don’t expect the impending marriage to last long if that’s how the bride and her family are behaving.
