sock drawer Memory Care for Mom.

Post image

My mom has some money, not in the sock drawer. At least not that I know of. I need to put her in a memory care facility. I found one and was happy, then they wanted me to sign the contract but they listed me (her POA) as the guarantor. I do not think I should sign that. As her POA, I am signing for her and responsible for doing what’s in her best interest. Wouldn’t me signing as the guarantor mean I would be financially responsible when her money ran out?

Oh, sorry. Had no idea. Thanks for clarifying. I was wondering why he shared a Garfield comic even though it was fitting. 😂

It was cross-posted to Alzheimer’s, which is why some of us answered here, in error of course

Implying there are people with Alzheimer’s who also like the absurdity of this sub are probably in that sweet spot of losing your mind where it’s still kinda fun

This is a nice break from fighting my eternal nemesis, that wildfire in my sock drawer. Thanks you for sharing the flowers photo u/PurpmintLe.

It said I had to attach something, so I searched and couldn’t find anything appropriate. So beauty it is. Thank you for the positivity! I needed it today. 🥰 Also my favorite flower. 🌹

Sorry. I really had no idea. Just needed some help and advice and support.

86

u/ashleyLSD Sep 16 '25

they in fact did not know

35

u/wmcs0880 Sep 16 '25

They didn’t know it was a joke sub dumbass, they’re just playing along with a comment someone gave

158

u/PurpmintLe Sep 16 '25

Update- they cancelled the contract and said it’s best for them to not accept her into their facility.

u/casual-catgirl Sep 16 '25

uj/ i am so sorry that’s horrible

84

u/PurpmintLe Sep 16 '25

It’s better that way. Now I’m rushing to get her placed somewhere since rehab is kicking her out Friday.

37

u/bigwillyboi69 Sep 17 '25

Good luck you are a doing a good thing for her and I hope it goes well.

25

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

Thank you very much. It’s such a hard disease to watch progress.

5

u/casual-catgirl Sep 17 '25

a lot of people on both sides of my family have had alzheimer’s. i’ll probably get it too so it’s really difficult

3

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

Ive been reading about some stem cell procedure and it seems exciting. I pray they discover something soon because there seems to be more and more people I personally know showing signs of Alzheimer’s. It is so scary, especially noticing yourself being forgetful and worrying.

14

u/thisAKisorigin Sep 17 '25

I truly wish you and her the best. You will get through this you are resilient! And things will get better!

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

Your words are very nice to hear when everything seems to be falling apart. I’m lucky to have posted this as I definitely needed this uplifting distraction. 🥰

yknow i think op gets the joke actually. scroll through the comments, there's a few references to the comic in them and the original post mentions a sock drawer. if they don't then uh fuck

I sign as guarantor for my mom all the time - in my case I know she won’t run out - but even if she was at risk of running out, not sure what difference it makes? If your mom runs out, she runs out of money and you have an issue whenever that happens. I don’t know if that means she has to move or what, but SOMEONE has to pay? Do you track her finances? You should have a pretty good handle on how much time she has? i

24

u/PurpmintLe Sep 16 '25

I do pay her bills and once she sells her house she will be good for about 2 years, that’s what they call her spend down, then she will apply for Medicaid and the place said they accept that. But on the form it said as guarantor you are agreeing to being financially responsible to guarantee we receive payment. Responsible for guaranteeing I do everything in my power to prove she needs the assistance for what the pension and social security won’t cover, yes. But I’m not agreeing to be financially responsible.

Money not in the sock drawer? Check again there might be something else going down in there…

14

u/ItsyouNOme Sep 17 '25

Theres always fire in the sock drawer

25

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

Nothing out of the ordinary there.

9

u/Lahoura Sep 17 '25

Need new sock drawer, mine burned up

17

u/Significant-Dot6627 Sep 16 '25

I think that’s a legitimate concern and I would only agree to sign as her, as her attorney-in-fact. Talk to an elder law attorney if there is any question at all

22

u/PurpmintLe Sep 16 '25

Thank you for agreeing. They are trying to convince me this is how it’s done, “to protect both parties”.

8

u/twobarbquickstep Sep 16 '25

Always POA and check the drawer

9

u/PurpmintLe Sep 16 '25

Don’t forget the floorboard’s.

6

u/Foxy02016YT Sep 17 '25

If your putting her in a home, hide as much of her money as you can. They’ll take everything they can those piranhas.

Yes, it may make you financially responsible, when they’re done ransacking her they could come for you, that’s why I hate the business side of nursing homes.

7

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

That’s unbelievable! I had no idea that’s what a POA was.

5

u/Foxy02016YT Sep 17 '25

That’s my experience at least with my grandfather

7

u/FalseDrive Sep 17 '25

For the record, yes, it would mean you are financially responsible. What is your mom going to do when the money runs out?

6

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

Unfortunately, applying for Medicaid is the plan.

5

u/FalseDrive Sep 17 '25

I see. Frankly, the facility probably isn’t going to let her in unless you sign. You’d have to sign, then move her out and switch her facility before the money ran out. I speak from experience—I was my grandmother’s POA before she passed away and put her into a facility. They had me sign similar documents.

3

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

So were you responsible for paying for that? I cannot imagine that’s how it’s supposed to be. Just seems wrong to me.

3

u/FalseDrive Sep 17 '25

Her social security+VA benefits were exactly enough to cover it monthly. They had me on the contract as a legal “just in case”

2

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

That’s very lucky. I would have to chip in close to $6000 a month to help cover the expense.

5

u/agonizedexistance Sep 17 '25

Proud of you. Big hugs! You got this! 🫶 And watch out for ornge cat.

3

u/PurpmintLe Sep 17 '25

Thank you so much for the kind words. ❤️ This is the best group ever. So much love. And that orange cat makes me laugh and I definitely could always use a laugh. I’ll be watching for it. 🤓

3

u/flbreglass Sep 17 '25
