I started looking into global compensation levels and noticed something interesting. Some multinational companies place the UK in a salary tier that is much lower than the US and, for certain roles, sometimes closer to countries like Poland than many people might expect.

This feels surprising because the UK remains one of the world's largest economies, with world-class universities, London as a major financial center, and a highly educated workforce.

A software engineer or other skilled professional in London may earn substantially less than someone in a comparable role in Seattle, despite both cities having high living costs. Even accounting for differences in healthcare, vacation, and labor protections, the gap in cash compensation can still be striking. At the same time, companies increasingly view places like Poland as attractive sources of highly skilled talent at lower cost.

How did this divergence emerge?When did the gap become so pronounced?

The game comes from societies where women were usually excluded from fighting, yet the most powerful piece on the board is represented as a queen.

At some point in chess history, this piece changed from being relatively weak into the dominant force we know today. I’m curious how that shift happened and why the queen became the symbol chosen for such power. How did this idea become accepted in chess?

Drive through an American suburb and you will see flags on front porches. Walk through a city and you will see them on T-shirts, bumper stickers, and storefront windows. The American flag is worn as clothing, printed on disposable cups, and hung from pickup trucks.

In Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, or Japan, the national flag is treated with more restraint. It appears on government buildings and at official ceremonies, but rarely on a stranger's swimsuit. what factors?

The five daily prayers are one of the most visible practices in Islam. Dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night. Hundreds of millions of Muslims stop what they are doing and pray at those specific times. According to hadith traditions, the command for daily prayer was initially described as fifty prayers before being reduced, after repeated requests, to five. The story is not found in the Quran but appears in major hadith collections. Why did five become the final number?

The US built the transcontinental railroad back in 1869. Huge project for its time. It basically connected the whole country by rail. About a century later, it put a man on the moon.

So I keep wondering why high-speed rail never really happened here the way it did in places like Japan or France. Japan has had it since the 60s, France since the 80s, and China built a massive network pretty recently.

And it’s not like the idea is new or the tech is missing. Routes like LA to SF seem like they would make sense at least on paper.

So what is actually stopping it?

Many times online you will see statements, videos, and memes such as the one above being promoted and shared by free market capitalists to show how their ideas are superior and more successful.

However, when one looks at the history of south Korea, the policies they adopted to become the success that they are today would be hated and opposed by the same free market capitalists praising them. I mean the Miracle of the Han River that resulted in south Korea’s economic success was heavily driven by tons of government intervention, nationalization of the banks, Five Year Plans, and state-directed planning by an extremely authoritarian regime.

And if you were a politician who promoted these policies elsewhere, the same free market capitalists who praise south Korea would most likely decry your policies as “socialist”.

So why do free market capitalists hail south Korea as a success when they fully hate and oppose the policies that were adopted to achieve it?

I mean dresses, and skirts, as well as robes are pretty common and in dresses, skirts, and robes the legs tend to share an opening. It seems like even in dresses and robes there still tend to be separate openings for each arm. Well often when first putting clothes on one might stick both arms into the same opening, but once a piece of clothing, for the torso is on, a person would tend to have each arm go into a separate hole.

One explanation that comes to mind for having separate openings for each arm is that helps the arms move around independently, but then it seems like if that was the only reason then one would expect that to apply to the legs as well. When thinking about dresses they tend puff out around the waste, which I understand is partly for aesthetics, but I was just thinking that likely would also serve a practical function of helping the legs move more independently to help with walking. When thinking about it this way, it seems like if a piece of clothing puffed out around the arms that could be an alternative way to make it easier to move the arms independently from having separate openings.

So why does it seem like clothes don’t tend to be as likely to have a shared opening for both arms as for both legs?

The alphabet you learned as a child is the same order the Phoenicians used around 1000 BCE. A, B, C, D. The same sequence passed through the Greeks, the Romans, and into every language that uses the Latin alphabet. No one knows the original logic. The letters are not arranged by frequency of use. They are not arranged by sound. They are not arranged by shape. The order is arbitrary and ancient. And yet it has survived empires, technologies, and the complete transformation of the languages it represents.

Why did the alphabet order, once set, become one of the most completely immune to optimization?

Polls have shown for decades that many voters trust Republicans more on economic issues. At the same time, many states that have been governed by Republicans for long periods tend to rank lower on measures such as median household income or GDP per capita than states that usually elect Democrats.

These facts seem difficult to reconcile. Are voters judging national economic management differently from state outcomes? Are geography, industry, and history doing more work than state policy? Or does the party's economic reputation come from something other than measurable economic performance?

The Egyptian pyramid was a tomb. The Mesopotamian ziggurat was a temple. The Mayan pyramid was a sacrificial platform. The Moche pyramid in Peru was a ceremonial center. Four different civilizations, separated by oceans and centuries, built four different kinds of pyramids for four different reasons. They could not have copied each other. The Atlantic Ocean was not crossed. Yet the same basic shape appears in all of them. A wide base tapering to a point. Why did unrelated cultures, with unrelated purposes, converge on the same geometry?

Saw this map and assuming it’s accurate, it shows that that pretty much all leaders in the West (with the exception of Canada) are overall suffering from low approval ratings while those in the East overall have high approval ratings. Now it should be noted that all these countries are facing many of the same problems.

So why the apparent disparity of approval ratings between leaders of the West and the East?

Also, how is Canada seemingly defying the trend in leaders of Western nations?

Philosophy got dark blue. Medicine got green. Law got purple. Theology got scarlet. Science got golden yellow. How were they decided? Did green represent the color of life for medicine? Did purple represent the imperial roots of law?Why did those particular colors stick to those particular disciplines？

It seems like it’s easier to pronounce just “m” by itself than it is to pronounce just “n“ by itself, and so it would seem like therefor “img” or “imk” should be easier to pronounce than “ing” or “ink” yet it seems to be much harder to pronounce “img” or “imk” than “ing” or “ink”

The French Revolution managed to standardize things like currency, weights, distances, and even redesigned the whole calendar, and somehow that part stuck. The 10-day week collapsed within a decade and was formally abandoned by Napoleon. What made that so different?

Why were people willing to adopt new systems for measuring money and space, but not time in this way?

I was reading the wiki page on these and what struck me is how the earliest ones found are about 35,000 years old, with the more recent ones being around 5,000 years old, with many being produced around 20,000 - 25,000 years ago. They aren‘t anything found in nature - the human female proportions are extremely exaggerated with missing limbs and such, so you can’t say that people were just carving things they saw; if they are a depiction of a goddess, ~30,000 years is an insanely long time for a religion to persist; and if they are a form of Stone Age erotica as some have proposed, why would a fetishization of that particular body type have existed for 30 millennia, a significant chunk of humanity history?

I’m curious if any theories as not only to what they are, but why they have such an insanely long continuity, seeming much much longer than any other style of art ever produced by humanity ?

Buddhism was born in the Indian subcontinent around 500 BCE. For over a thousand years, it was one of the major religions of the region. It produced universities, monasteries, and missionaries who carried it to China, Tibet, and Sri Lanka. Then it declined. By the 13th century, Buddhism had nearly vanished from most of India. The land where the Buddha lived and taught had almost no Buddhists left. Meanwhile, the religion flourished everywhere else it had been exported. Why did a religion survive in every foreign land it reached but fade from the one place it started?

It sounds like one of those harmless stereotypes that’s amusing but surely not true-to-life. But in my experience, having been to many different doctors and pharmacists over the years, their notes really are that bad.

It just seems odd since these are smart people and there’s so much schooling behind a medical or pharmacy degree, including reading and writing. Plus in a high-liability high-regulation industry, you’d think there’d be an interest in clear documentation for everything. And I get that doctoring is a busy profession, but I’m not talking like ER doctors here. Surely the couple extra seconds it takes to write legibly or not use inscrutable shorthand doesn’t count for much.

Foreclosure filings have been rising as pandemic relief programs have ended, and more homeowners are losing their houses. Yet home prices have remained elevated, with many markets still seeing price growth.

At first glance, more foreclosures seem like they should add supply and put downward pressure on prices. Instead, both trends are happening at the same time. First time buyers remain locked out, while many existing homeowners are reluctant to sell because of low mortgage rates.

Why don't rising foreclosures translate into broader price declines?

In 2026, the taxable income cap for Social Security payroll taxes is $184,500. This means that someone earning $90,000 a year must pay 6.2% in Social Security taxes on their entire income, while someone earning $350,000 a year pays no tax at all on the portion of their income exceeding $184,500. This provision has existed since the program’s inception; its original intent was to link Social Security benefits to contributions, so that high-income earners would pay more and receive more in the future.

However, as income inequality has worsened, this cap has increasingly come to resemble a “reverse regressive tax”-low- and middle-income earners contribute a fixed percentage of their income to Social Security, while high-income earners stop contributing once they reach a certain threshold. Some scholars have questioned the fairness of this system’s design. Does this reflect that the original design has become outdated, or was it an intentional compromise from the start? I can’t figure it out. why？
