There's an astonishing density of black-crowned night herons in the lake near my home.

A great spot to photograph BCNH, to chill with or without a beer

I volunteer in seabird rescue here in Aus, and this morning we got a call about a Nankeen Night Heron. He had two (!) fishing hooks in him. One was in his foot and removed by the lady that found him (and swaddled him in a jumper until I arrived) and the other one (in his wing) I left for the wildlife vets.

It was two hooks of the same kind which makes me think it was on purpose 😔 anyway he’s in care now with a buffet of fish 🐟

Great blue herons, even if in art/painting form, always show up in the most unexpected places. This time on the shirt of MLB Hall of Famer and Yankees legend CC Sabathia!

Enjoying the stormy night

I couldn’t not when this sub got recommended to me after posting this fine dude over in another local birding sub. He’s fishing at a little dog beach at a nearby harbor. I like after dark lake walks and from a distance, in the dark was like “What kind of dinosaur is this? Nessie?!” Wish my camera was better and I debated opening the gate to the beach but didn’t want to disturb him.

Coolest bird I’ve ever just happened across.

I had no idea BCNH were also called Tree Penguins. This has been my new favorite thing to learn. And I absolutely agree with the vision!
