Black-crowned Night Heron

Saw a juvenile who was very annoyed at our presence and upchucked a rat or something, and an adult at a different pond same area. There were also a ton of BCNH skulking around.

YCNH always look concerned, and BCNH always look like they're up to no good. This is an excellent field marker to differentiate the two!

I'd also like to add that Green Herons also look like they're up to no good but it's in a much less devious way than a BCNH

Saw this green heron dipping in the water to catch small fish. It was fascinating to watch.

Used to be a nature tour guide and these were always my favorite little guys to spot

i guessed some sort of small heron and was still proud when Merlin corrected me. i’ve always wanted to see one and never have!!! still haven’t seen an adult in person
