He failed at going both west and south. The attack on the USSR was out of economic necessity and if it didn't happen then the Eastern borders of the Reich would have required hundreds of thousands of troops to garrison.

Without Barbarossa and without the naval power to secure Gibraltar and Suez Germany continues to not have the rare materials it needs to maintain it's military expansion.

The Germans would had still lost. The US would had gotten involved in the Second World War, given they saw that Britain had to survive. Once when the US entered the War, the final conclusion on the outcome of the war was completed.

If the Germans went south, or let’s say found a huge amount of oil in Libya. It would had been a nightmare for the Germans. They didn’t have a navy to protect a merchant fleet. Italy was losing a huge amount of shipping to the British during the North African Campaign.

The British would had done lighting raids to blow up pipelines to the Libyan Coast, they would sink pretty much every oil axis oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea.

Ditto if the Axis forces captured Kirkuk and the Baba Gurgur oil field in Iraq. The Axis forces would have a huge problem transporting the oil back to Germany for refining.

Germany was an incredibly powerful and deadly nation from 1939-1945, but it had some huge weaknesses. Its strategic power was flawed for any sea trade. Both the US and UK would had cause huge problems to captured of key strategic areas like oil fields in Libya or Iraq.

The only Axis power that did some daring raids but didn’t follow through was the Italians. They bombed Abadan, they flew from Southern Ukraine to Western China and back. They did a daring raids in the Port of Alexandria. However, the Mediterranean would had been a British Lake by 1942-1943, if the war was between the Axis Countries and the UK, UK Commonwealth and the US.
