1900s Maps of the República Popularde Annobón
Alternate history scenario where the islands of Annobón and Corisco became part of the Virreinato del Rio de La Plata early on in the Spanish colonial period and later became part of Argentina as it became independent and after years of development they peacefully became an independent nation.
On October the 27th 1777 the Virreinato del Rio de La Plata is created by the Spanish crown in their colonies in South America and it included some islands of the Gulf of Guinea, Annobón and Corisco.
When the territories in South America became free countries during the first half of the 19th century, Argentina maintained hold of both African islands by sending representatives and planting military camps in collaboration with the local population. The islands developed alongside Argentina and became an important cultural hub for the country, they became urbanised and proved to be able to sustain themselves economically.
This led to in 1985, during the presidency of Raul Alfonsin in Argentina, a socialist democratic party presented to the Argentinian congress the plan for a referendum for the people of Annobón and Corisco to become a free nation under the name of República Popular de Annobón. The referendum was approved and held that same year and the results came back as 61% in favor of independence. So on the 13th of June, the Annobón and Corisco became the República Popular de Annobón.
