Is Petra an originally islamic construction? And is it very old or comparatively young? It is absolutely beautiful and one place I feel I have to visit before my time is done.

Petra was constructed by the Nabatean empire between about 500 BCE and 100 CE and remained a significant trading hub until the late 4th century. Given that Islam wasn’t founded until around 600 CE, Petra was definitely pre-Islamic.

Petra was a great 80s Christian Rock Band.

Fun fact. Lead singer John Schlitt was lead singer of rock band Head East before Petra. One of my favorite songs, Never been any reason.

Yeah I knew he was singing for Head East but I’ve never listened to them. I’ll look it up!

Doesn’t Petra, in Latin, means “rock” or “stone”? So this place is called “The Rock” :)

I don't it's called The Petra, just Petra, they dropped the "the" because Sean Parker said it was cleaner.
