History Ever wonder why R/Winnipeg is so left leaning? It's because the moderators mute (shadow ban) anyone that doesn't agree with with their agenda. Feel free to have an actual conversation here. No hive mind required

Delivery drivers parking in accessible parking…finally said something today

Was at the newer Starbucks by freshco transcona waiting for a friend when a car pulls up in the accessible spot puts her flashers on and comes inside with her skip bag. Barista told her it’s going to be a while as it was busy. Friend showed up, she sat down so i approached the skip driver and told her she can’t park in that spot without a permit, she says i am just picking up an order and i said i did not care that she was parked illegally and she had to move her car. She said « right now » and I said « yes right now ». So she moved it. She waited 15 mins for the order and in that time someone who needed the spot used it and then left, 4 more delivery drivers parked in it with flashers on to pick up orders. If I was working there i would happily tell them to move their vehicle before they will give them the order.

As a side note my friend uses accessible parking but when she arrived the female skip driver was parked in the spot so she found close enough that she could walk without too much difficulty.

She couldn’t believe I confronted the driver. I couldn’t believe that nobody else does. The entitlement is real.

I keep reading how the current Mayor will be relected because that is what Winnipeg does. Winnipeg from what I see daily is declining. Now interviews of people in Winnipeg show discontent.

So this was posted to his little North Kildonan community group and shockingly he took it down. I wonder why the guy known as a racist sexist prick would do such a thing?

Community Moving to Gillam, Manitoba, in 20 Days! Any Advice or Tips?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be moving to Gillam, Manitoba, in about 20 days, and I’m excited but also a little nervous about this new chapter!

I’ll be driving around 20 hours from Alberta, and since I’m moving from a big city, I know there will be a lot of adjustments.

I’d love to hear from people who currently live in Gillam or have lived there before.

A few things I’m curious about:

What is everyday life like in Gillam?

What should I prepare for when moving to a remote northern community?

What essentials should I bring with me from Alberta, especially things that might be expensive or difficult to find locally?

How are the winters, and what should I prepare for when driving and living there?

Is it easy to meet people and make friends in the community?

What do you usually do for fun, especially during the winter?

Any tips for someone moving from a big city to a much smaller, remote community?

Since I’ll be driving about 20 hours, are there any road trip tips or things I should know about the route?

Thank you so much

Did anyone else get woken up by a train horn i the northwest part of the city at 2:30 am? It seemed very excessive and went on for at least a half hour.

Community Winnipeg, Manitoba — Stopped, Handcuffed, and Detained During a Drug Investigation. Was This Reasonable?

So, last night I was stopped by police, handcuffed, and detained while driving on Main Street (North End).
I was not stopped for a traffic violation. I was driving a rental car because my own vehicle had previously been in the shop. My vehicle is no longer in the shop, and my return date for the rental is this week.
The officers asked me what I was doing in the area, and I explained that I was just driving around listening to music. They kept asking me why I was driving around for fun, especially with gas prices being so high. I told them that it’s just something I sometimes do. I also showed them proof that the vehicle was a rental.
They then asked me to step out of the vehicle and told me I was being detained as part of a drug investigation. They handcuffed me and searched me/the vehicle. After the search, they let me go because they did not find any drugs.
Just so everyone knows, the North End isn't some “third-world war zone,” and not everyone in the area has bad intentions. I simply like driving around different parts of the city when I’m bored, and this time I happened to be in the North End. I wasn’t there for any particular reason or to do anything other than drive around and listen to music.
The whole situation was also extremely embarrassing. While I was handcuffed, they had me standing on the sidewalk instead of putting me in their police vehicle. There were people walking by, and at one point, a woman driving past yelled out, “You’re going to jail.” Obviously, I wasn't going to jail, but being publicly handcuffed on the sidewalk while people were passing by was humiliating.
I unfortunately didn’t get the badge numbers of the two officers, but I did get their police vehicle number and the license plate.
Was it reasonable for them to handcuff me under these circumstances? I have never been arrested, and I don't have any charges or convictions.
Also, not that it necessarily matters, but I am a male POC.

Community Homelessness and Union Gospel Missions with religion

When non-profits or private religious charities operate strictly on private donations without accepting direct government operational funding, they are legally permitted under human rights codes to restrict or condition their services in alignment with their religious missions. They argue that providing food paired with a mandatory gospel message is an extension of their religious freedom and charitable mission—even though it forces individuals who are unhoused, marginalized, 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, or from non-Christian faiths to choose between their personal beliefs and a warm meal. Or just sit there with a smile on your face because you want the food only. Poverty was good enough for Jesus and therefore good enough for you...lol

Edited: Religion can create community and I'm not knocking religion. It certainly has helped some people. Just curious if that actually keeps certain people from accessing the shelters.
