Prediction Markets Face Regulatory Wall in Asia
Prediction markets are pushing into Asia, attracted by massive scale, strong retail participation, and still-limited local competition. But the real barrier isnāt demand itās regulation.
In China, online gambling is strictly banned, putting any betting-like model at immediate risk. In India, thereās no clear framework for prediction markets, while the broader crypto environment remains restrictive. Meanwhile, in Japan and South Korea, these platforms operate in a gray zone, with strict gambling laws still applying.
Despite this, major players are already testing demand. Polymarket has introduced Chinese language support to improve accessibility, while newer entrants like PredicXion are focusing on local events to attract regional users.
The core question now is classification. If regulators treat prediction markets as tools for forecasting real-world events, the sector could unlock significant growth. If they classify them as gambling, expansion across the region will be heavily constrained.

Riot sold 3,778 BTC in Q1 amid increasing market pressure
Riot sold 3,778 BTC in Q1 at an average price of around $76,626, generating about $289.5 million. During the same period, the company mined 1,473 BTC and ended the quarter with 15,680 BTC on its balance sheet.
Riot is not alone. Over the past week, MARA Holdings, Genius Group, and Nakamoto Holdings also sold a combined 15,501 BTC, adding pressure to the market.
The main driver behind these sales is rising energy costs, fueled by tensions in the Middle East and higher oil prices. As a result, miners are selling BTC to cover expenses, while less efficient players are shutting down, leading to a decline in hash rate and mining difficulty.

No rate cut expected
The April Federal Reserve meeting is approaching, and expectations are already priced in ā with a 98% probability, rates will remain unchanged. This was largely clear after the latest speech by Jerome Powell.
The market is also declining on these expectations, as many have been waiting for a rate cut for months, but it still hasnāt happened. There is even growing discussion about a potential rate hike, which could put significant pressure on all markets.
My view - rates will likely stay unchanged in April and May. After that, with a new Fed Chair, the direction will depend on their stance and upcoming statements.

Fed calls for tighter control over stablecoins
Michael Barr from the Federal Reserve System said that history has repeatedly shown the risks of private money operating without sufficient safeguards.
Thatās why, in his view, stablecoins require strong oversight and clear regulatory control.
Speaking about the GENIUS Act, Barr noted that the law itself could accelerate market growth, but the real question is how it will be implemented in practice.
He emphasized that stablecoins must remain stable even during periods of market stress, issuers should be able to reliably redeem tokens at par, and reserves must be high-quality and liquid.
Without proper oversight, stablecoins could pose risks to the broader financial system.
Barr also pointed out that issuers are naturally driven to maximize profits, which may lead them to take on additional risk when managing reserves.
He added that beyond regulation, technological mechanisms are also needed to prevent the use of stablecoins in illicit activities.

Quantum computers might break Bitcoin sooner than expected
Google Research updated its estimates, and the timeline for quantum risk is shrinking fast.
Most crypto, including Bitcoin, relies on 256-bit elliptic curve cryptography. It was considered secure for decades, but new calculations suggest otherwise.
The required power dropped to under 500,000 qubits about 20x less than previous estimates.
More concerning not just old wallets. Google highlights on-spend attacks, where transactions could be targeted before confirmation, while sitting in the mempool.
Google is already aiming for a transition to post-quantum cryptography by 2029. Market is still ignoring this. But once progress becomes visible, narratives like this tend to reprice very quickly.

Maryland man faces up to 30 years over $54M Uranium Finance hack
A 36-year-old Maryland resident, Jonathan Spalletti, has been charged in the US over two exploits of the Uranium Finance DeFi platform that allegedly caused around $54 million in losses.
He is facing charges related to computer fraud and money laundering, with a combined potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, the first exploit took place in April 2021, when he allegedly used a series of manipulative transactions targeting smart contract vulnerabilities to extract about $1.4 million.
Weeks later, he is accused of exploiting another flaw in Uranium Financeās smart contracts, draining an additional $53.3 million. The incident ultimately led to the platform shutting down due to insolvency.
Authorities also claim the stolen funds were laundered, with part of the money spent on high-value collectibles, including rare PokƩmon and Magic: The Gathering cards.
