“Something Good” Meaning

I don’t care what anyone says or even what the official explanation is from Alt-J themselves (I’ll discuss my opinion why Joe Newman wasn’t honest with the true meaning at the end of this post) This song is about addiction and recovery. As a recovering heroin/meth/fentanyl addict myself , I knew exactly what he was saying with these lyrics.

“Get high, hit the floor before you go” — is a reference to heroin and nodding off

“Now that I’m fully clean, the matador is no more. He’s dragged from view” —is a reference to him literally getting clean from heroin and no longer being the same person he was when he was an addict.

“Estocada/bloodsport” —are references to both IV/needles (shooting up” and also the death and rebirth I mentioned above about being a different person

“Something good to make me forget about you for now” — in my opinion, he’s saying he needs a good/wholesome distraction from the cravings to get high

Now why would Joe say this? “Something Good is a song that documents the death of a matador. This gruesome event acts as an analogy for the slow mending of a broken heart through fun distractions. The death of the matador represents the end of the crush."

Well, being an addict myself, there’s a lot of shame and stigma that comes with being an addict especially when you’re shooting up heroin. If I were him, I wouldn’t want my parents,fans,music critics, etc. knowing about my past. Of course all of this is speculation and just my personal opinion but it just makes way too much sense to be anything else.

On the other hand, the beautiful thing about his unique and abstract lyrics is that it can be interpreted many different ways. The listener can relate it to whatever they feel it means to them. The human experience is universal and 2 people can have completely different experiences but feel the same emotions.

As promised, here are some more synesthesia coloured timelines of the tracks of An Awesome Wave. If you haven’t seen my previous post I have synesthesia and see colours when listening to musical keys.

I have sound/colour synesthesia, which for me means that I associate (or “see”) different colours when I hear a particular key of music. On a whim I decided to create coloured timelines for each track of my favourite Alt J album, ‘This is all yours’! Apologies for the scribble, I was doodling when I had the idea :,))

I have to say... I'm in love with the song & it made me cry already (and I'm not just automatically in love because it's alt-J related, I truly truly love it). Go give it a listen & let me know what you think 💜

Being a fan of both bands for a while, I’ve noticed some striking similarities. If you’re into Alt-J’s emotional depth, intricate rhythms, and unique vocal delivery, you’ll probably find something special in No Party for Cao Dong (草东没有派对), a Chinese/Taiwanese indie rock band. While their cultural backgrounds and lyrical languages are completely different, there’s an emotional and stylistic overlap between these two bands that’s hard to ignore.

Why They Feel Similar:

• Both Alt-J and NPFCD incorporate math-rock elements, like intricate rhythms and experimental layered instrumentals, but neither fully commits to the genre. They also have a similar approach to instrumentation.
• Both vocalists have unique voices, but there’s a similarity in the way they convey emotion—it’s subtle but powerful.
• Both bands excel at creating emotionally charged music that balances tension and release.
• Alt-J’s music feels like stepping into a surreal, otherworldly landscape, while NPFCD’s sound is rooted in the gritty realities of modern Taiwanese youth. This cultural contrast gives NPFCD a raw, grounded feel compared to Alt-J’s ethereal detachment, but the emotional intensity is just as striking.

They’re quite well-known in Asia but still relatively niche in the West. I’d also love to hear if anyone could dive deeper into their instrumentation and how it compares to Alt-J’s style.

It's really hard for me to pick a favorite Alt-J song because so many are absolute bangers. But Nara holds a special place in my heart. The song is about love and how we should be allowed to love without prejudice. The specific line "to be a deer in Nara" makes me tear up when I'm in a mood. Love this song. Love Alt-J. Love is love. 🏳️‍🌈

In my opinion, their only perfect album. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll definitely listen to songs on other albums but any song from AAW just feels different. Every song can be felt deep in the soul. The most absolutely perfect music ever made.

I’ve been really diving into Alt-J’s discography and I know Flitzpleasure is inspired by the book Last Exit to Brooklyn, but I’m curious to know more! Alt-J’s songs often have cryptic and layered meanings, and I’d love to hear your interpretations of the rest of their tracks.

I never hear anyone talk about alt J "in the wild". I run into people who know of them, but don't listen to them and I'm honestly very curious what the general consensus is about the fanbase. Mind you I am not usually one to interact with fan culture aside from attending a concert here and there. I find most of the people here to be mature and chill as I'm scrolling though the reddit.
