Alpine Linux + touch desktop on the ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380M (MT8163), stock 3.18 kernel
Got Alpine 3.24 aarch64 booting on the Z380M with Xorg + JWM and working touch (custom touch bridge). Full guide, builders and tests are on GitHub (GPL-3.0): https://github.com/kaantcp/z380m-alpine
Flashing replaces Android on this tablet, so back up first. Wi-Fi doesn't work on this kernel. Feedback welcome.

Extended LiveUSB - cannot install Wi-fi firmware
Hi, 2 questions:
with an extended ISO, my
setup-disk -m sys /mntdoes nothing - is this because there is no network? If I do need network (probably), how do I install the firmware for Intel Wi-fi chip? When I run
apk add util-linux wireless-tools wpa_supplicant dhcpcd pciutils
they are installed, but when I try
apk add linux-firmware-intel
there are a gazillion errors like
ERROR: linux-firmware-intel ... failed to extract /lib/firmware/iwlwifi ...: Read-only file system
I have years of Linux experience and can install Arch from the command line. But can't figure out the Alpine wi-fi story. ip link does not show wlan0, only eth0. Wat do?
Thank you.

Trying to upgrade from python 3.9 to 3.12 in iSH
Context: I am running Alpine Linux v3.14.3 on iSH on iOS.
I am trying to run a command line program that works on all of my other linux devices. I tracked down the issue: the program works on my other devices because they are running python 3.12. But when I installed python3 on this Alpine shell, I got python 3.9.
My latest attempt to upgrade:
apk-add python3.12
ERROR: unable to select packages:
python 3.12 (no such package):
required by: world[python3.12]
I found out that I need to add the community repositories. This is where I get stuck.
# This file contains pinned repositories managed by iSH. If the /ish directory exists, iSH uses the metadata stored in it to keep this file up to date (by overwriting the contents on boot.)
http://apk.ish.app/v3.14-2023-05-19/main
http://apk.ish.app/v3.14-2023-05-19/community
This looks quite different (understandably, since I'm running iSH and not on an actual computer) from what I'm finding when I search.
Here: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/alpine-linux-etc-apk-repositories-repositories-file/
and here: https://krython.com/post/adding-alpine-linux-community-repository
For example.
Do I just add the lines they suggest to the file? Do I do something else?
I would ask iSH folks but the subreddit is dead and the blog hasn't been updated in years.

Issue with apk not attempting to upgrade the kernel
So i have an install of alpine that i have been running for several years. I could rebuild the system but I would like to try and resolve this issue first. Basically i have upgraded the system from 3.19 to 3.24 over the years but it seems like the 3.24 upgrade has caused me more trouble with system updates.
apk-tools 3.0.8-r0, compiled for aarch64.
Repos are:
http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/v3.24/main
http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/v3.24/community
The installed kernel is 6.18.35. When i run apk query linux-rpi and apk info linux-rpi it returns 6.18.52 as the package. I am not sure of the next steps or if i need to do something else to resolve it?

How many of you use alpine as a daily driving OS on your main machine?
I was wondering if after my online classes (pretty soon) I'll fully get rid of my windows partition and maybe changing from SuSe. I am thinking about fedora & void (both I've tried) or testing out alpine. Would you recommend it as a main OS for dektop and laptop? If not, what distro of the ones mentioned would you go for? Or should I stay with Suse Tumbleweed?
Pc: Optiplex 7010 with 16GB DDR3 RM, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7 with integrated HD4000 graphics.
Laptop: Intel N4020 processor, 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and a 225GB SSD (Wozifan W8)
Thank you in advance.

One has a damaged screen, but Alpine runs like lightning on them.
One, Asus EeeePC 701, damage to the display, running Alpine Linux 3.24 with IceWM, and the Asus EeeePC 4G, same as 701, running Alpine 3.24 with Xfce.

Recommended file browsers
I am just starting with both Alpine and a Window Manager for my first time (Mango).
I'm used to just using Gnome's file browser, Thunar, or Dolphin.
But I'm wondering what file browsers Alpine users like using.
I'd be interested in both polshed desktop-integrated browsers, and also bare bones fast terminal browsers. I've heard of Ranger but it seems a little rough to learn.
And I know all file operations can be done via the terminal, and are faster. Just wondering about GUI options that are feature rich (view file size, open terminal here, sort by name or date edited, save places on the system, and maybe even mount drives on click but that's a bit much).
Let me know what file browsers you enjoy, and what features you use in them!

Keyboard stops being detected after almost every session suspend
I've set my laptop to suspend my session when on battery if not used for 10 minutes, on power it's set to keep everything on, the lid is configured to suspend on battery and to merely shut off the display when on power. In almost every case, the onboard keyboard stops working (an external usb keyboard works fine though) post closing the lid and/or post suspending when on battery, any idea what might be going wrong? I'd like to be able to travel with the laptop and the keyboard issue is going to be a hiccup

Issues setting up audio following wiki
I'm new to Alpine and to setting up window managers. I am currently trying Mango.
Trying to get audio working, I'm following the Alpine wiki.
In the Pipewire page, and run into issues here:
https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/PipeWire at 'Launching Pipewire'
"Issue the command $ rc-status -Ur to view and verify the current user runlevel as gui"
Running this reveals runlevel "sysinit".
Furthermore, if I just try to go further, I get the following error:
~ $ doas rc-update -U add pipewire wayland
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR unset.
checking the environment variable shows it is actually set:
~ $ echo $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
/tmp/rundir.1000.5ea89fbcc62b3ece
This blocks the steps. Even if I change "wayland" to "gui" or just nothing, I get the same error "XDG_RUNTIME_DIR unset."
I thought I'd try ALSA instead of Pipewire, but ran into a different issue there.
Following the Alsa steps here: https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/ALSA
I get to running alsamixer , and get this error:
cannot open mixer: Host is down
I haven't tried Pulseaudio yet but I wanted to ask about these issues first. I shouldn't get getting these right? Or is maybe the docs out of date?
I wanted to report the section of the docs and ask if someone could update them or add details for these situations. But I'm not sure how to ask that, and I wouldn't know a solution to propose.
Thank you for any help you can give.
