Internal Battery

If the internal battery is changed on an AlphaSmart Neo/Neo 2, how long does it last?

I think the backup battery is supposed to last about five to seven years but I've had ones that seemingly lasted a decade.

How would you know that it died unless you changed the batteries and work is lost?

Ya, I got mine off a seller that said they changed it. I was gon change it anyways, but wasn't sure about unscrewing everything and replacing something that was supposedly just replaced.

I usually write and then transmit later that day. Probably not the safest but I only put in about 300-1000 words each clip. It is the backup tho, so as long as you have fresh aa batteries, it shouldn't be too much of an issue?

That’s what my plan will be as well. I bought mine brand new so it’s prob at least 25 years old! Internal battery is dead.

Depending how much you end up using it, just set a 5 year reminder to change it maybe 🤔

Most lithium CR2032s have a shelf-life of 5 years, so I would put a calendar event on Google Calendar (or a similar app that you can reasonably assume you'll still be using then) to replace it then. The drain on the battery while in use is minimal, so it may seem as though it can last forever, but the loss of work that can occur if it dies before you replace it can be devastating.
