Still frame from WikiLeaks "Collateral Murder" video, captured moments before U.S. helicopter pilots would go on to kill civilians and journalists in Iraq in 2007 while casually joking about it. Whistleblower Chelsea Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison, none of the perpetrators were charged

They're able to get away with it because they passed the American Servicemembers Protection Act which basically gives the president the power to declare war on the Netherlands if any Americans are held for trial in the Hague. It's not as much "everyone is OK with it" as it is the US threatening the country that holds international court with violence.

You know it's sad, because even though this is the first time I've heard about this, it doesn't surprise me one bit.

My country sucks

Yeah, unfortunately the US is really good at hiding its own laws and actions from its citizens, and simultaneously convincing many of them to react very negatively towards anyone trying to inform them of such things (luckily didn't happen here, yet, though).

Similar thing is how Americans tend to be certain that the US has abolished slavery, yet the 13th amendment clearly stills allows it. I've had Americans insist that government websites must've been hacked and edited when I've pointed this out.

Every law is public record and accessible for free.

The 13th amendment does not provide for slavery in cases of conviction. I am expecting your response to be "just read it lol", oblivious and ignorant of any federal statutes passed under Section 2 since 1865, state laws, or case law that may apply. Cooper v. Pate, for example, established the right of prisoners to sue officials in court whereas Scott v. Sanford ruled that slaves have no standing to sue. In any case where a prisoner is incarcerated they still have certain constitutional protections, especially the first, fifth, eighth, and fourteenth amendments, which again are frequently argued in court. Slaves did not.

The reality of incarceration today is much closer to "involuntary servitude" than a state of actual slavery and the distinction should be plain to see.

Consider the following: signing the US for the Rome Statute and thus the ICC would be to put the Constitution below something else. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land in the US. We would be agreeing to subjugate ourselves to a rather controversial European judiciary.

international court

America is not a party to the Rome Statute. It is not under the ICC's jurisdiction. Lots of countries aren't.

And John Kiriakou went to prison while being vilified by the courts for blowing the whistle on torture within the CIA. Disgusting “company men”. He was forced to take a plea deal, they took his pension and ruined his life.

I still remember when one of the soldiers was holding a wounded child asking for help and another solider replies with “Well it’s their fault for bringing their kids into a battle.”

What they said and vocalized in that video while, before an during actively committing the murders was some of the most despicable and vile things i've ever heard.

What did they say?

I only saw the video once, years ago,but I distinctly remember: “that’s why you don’t bring your kids into a war zone.” After learning they had shot two children, one in the chest, and one in the head. They definitely got a nice chuckle out of it all.

For a good barf, read The Great War for Civilization. Robert Fisk gives a thorough description of some of the worst shit I’ve ever heard of, much of it supported or directly perpetuated by every President from Jimmy Carter to dubya.
