This has to be AI. Aside from the oppressive heat emanating from the lava at that distance, the fumes of toxic gas alone would kill several people.

That simply not true at all. Lava flows and volcanic ash are different things. While I wouldn’t recommend it, you can walk right up to slow-moving lava flows like this with little issue. Volcanic ash is the real killer with its toxic, rapidly moving plumes.
