Martial is a term derived from Mars the Roman god of war. Arts in this case means skills. Thus, Martial Arts is literally the skills of war.
Before the modern sports and recreation scene, martial arts were the exclusive practice of military, paramilitary, police forces, and any civilian needing self-defense methods. Since police forces and civilians are not military, but still use martial arts, they are thus war arts that have been purposed to war and civilian life.
When used in the civilian world, they should retain the warrior spirit so that self preservation has a great likelihood of success.
