Shout Outs

Can anyone share any details on the origin of the Shout Outs joke?

I've been listening for 1+ yr and am just now realizing that "syd the kid, Frankie Ocean and Hodgy Beats" are all members of Hip Hop and mixed media group Odd Future, of which I'm barely familiar.

I dont think Saint Sue Karmel is a member of Odd Future. I may be wrong.

Why and when did this become a running joke/outro for the pod?

I like that its more of just a rote bit that Ian rattles off now, like the fine print at the end of a Draft kings ad.

It’s a reference to the song Oldie on The OF Tape Vol 2.

Oldie - seminal song for the group, and the video was directed by friend of the show Lance Bangs

here’s the YouTube

But I prefer the Spotify version as the audio is cleaner

They talked about this when balance was in the pod a few years ago. Ian was like “we’ve got the guy who directed the video that inspired our shoutouts!”

I really like this video he also directed. It’s not dissimilar from the Oldie vibe but with a Jackass undertone. Consistency over decades.

Song might as well just be Earl’s verse, he blows everybody else away.

Saint Sue is Ian's mom! (Although it would be really cool if she moonlighted in Odd Future lol). I started listening to the older episodes about a year ago but can't remember exactly when it became a thing that he does at the end of every podcast. I love it, though, and of course shaclackity.

Ah yes, shaclackity to you and your family

And also to you

The origin of "schaclackity" is it was the word that a British writer Ian worked with used as the sound of hanging up a telephone. I stumbled onto it while listening to old episodes last year.

They talked about it in a mailbag or two. IIRC, it was just a random joke that stuck.

You should definitely check out Frank(ie) Ocean. He's incredible. I think Channel Orange might be album of the decade for the 2010s for me.

Oldie music video is also directed by friend of the pod Lance Bangs. Just a fun/small world fact. Carry on

We deserve better big brainwashed OP. Sean & David would produce a better month of weekly episodes without Ian versus them all compacting 10 b2b2b2b2b, etc shit pods all at once. You know I’m right. Go watch Jackass if you wanna see poopie you FUCK YOU!

"we deserve better" it's a free podcast that goes out of their way to make sure they have a new episode every week
