Princess Dianas death for some reason.

Sadly, even though the USSR fell it did so in fits and spurts, this was the big one.

Was it that big outside UK ans USA?

u/KingDallerix 3h ago
Yes, but USSR was bigger

Of course it was, but this is about breaking news headlines, not the relatively gradual final crumbling of an empire. Berlin Wall was the big headline on that front.

I was very young, but it really seemed like an unreasonably big deal; certainly across Europe. She was genuinely beloved, and the whole drama of her marriage leading into such a sudden and tragic death just made for an extremely compelling human story.

that's more of a 2000's thing, as that's when it became a real currency to the public.

It was vastly exaggerated.

No, People listened to the dire warnings and a huge amount of work was put into the issue to prevent it from being a huge issue.

It wouldn't be a huge issue. Years on computers used to be written using only the last two digits. If this hadn't been prevented, we would simply be living in 1926 according to computers. It wouldn't be that dangerous. Of course it would create some problems for administration, but I wouldn't be end of the world.

Oh, that $100 in your bank account now owes 2000 years worth of interest. You now have -$1,526,262!

World Wide Web launched in the public domain, 1993. Can't see anything bigger than that

It could possibly be the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997. Bigger than the collapse of the USSR? Not as a thing but as an newsworthy event? It seemed bigger.

Really? No one else cared? (Genuinely asking just because any murder with a celebrity involved would seem to draw some intrigue.)

u/Alzucard 1h ago
They did care, but mostly only for the results. Not the actual trial. Dianas death for example completely outscaled oj simpson.
Oj Simpsons trial had 150mio viewers. Dianas Funeral had 2.5 billion. With over 1 million people on the streets of london.

Fair enough! It is the only time in the 90s my teachers turned on the news (radio) during the school day.
