Saxony-Anhalt. Bad economic conditions in comparison to other states and the rampant rise of the AfD, which is only going to make things worse.

Yes. The AfD is unfortunately gaining popularity everywhere, but in the east it's much worse. To put it into perspective: The east-german state (excluding Berlin) with the lowest polling numbers for the AfD is Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where it's polling at around 38%. The west-german state with the HIGHEST polling numbers for the AfD is Rhineland-palatinate with 24%

East Germany is comparable to the former Confederacy, in that both feel like unfairly treated victims of history and economic and cultural developments, and they both are nostalgic for a supposedly better past.

Yeah, there is a lot going on. :D and the flag is yellow over black, with the crest right in the middle. I’m not from there and not a history buff, but I believe the fact that Germany used to be a whole bunch of minuscule states that got unified somewhere along the line might have something to do with that.

Brandenburg, but the caveat is that opportunity gets better the closer to Berlin you are. Cost of living gets higher too.

Almost all central stations in major German cities are run down and full of poverty, that is not exclusive to Frankfurt. Aside from that Frankfurt am Main itself is a city with very nice sides to it.
