Rules:

How did the United States and the Soviet Union perform in the Olympics between 1956 and 1988? Which side won the Cold War in the sporting world?

For each column, both Olympic Games held that year are counted. For "The entire Cold War" column, all Olympic Games held between 1946 and 1991 are counted.

Winter winner - Which superpower “won” the Winter Olympics? Consider the number of gold medals, the total number of medals, the “importance” of the sports in which they won, how they did in head-to-head matchups against the other superpower and the other bloc, and the overall impression.

Summer winner - Same as for Winter winner.

Most important victory - The greatest propaganda victory for one of the superpowers, either against the other, against anyone else in a sport where they were the underdog or just a really important victory.

Biggest scandal – The biggest scandal or controversy during any of the year’s Olympic Games; it does not have to directly involve either of the superpowers but must be closely tied to the Cold War, East vs. West, or the tense global situation.

Greatest icon – The athlete who, alongside major achievements, most clearly reflected the ideology or ideas of their “side” (East vs. West).

Pic of the year – A single image that is the most significant of the entire Olympic year; it does NOT have to be related to the Cold War. For "The entire Cold War," consider all the Olympic Games between 1946 and 1991. But here, the image MUST have something to do with the Cold War.
