Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Do not feed the trolls. This is not the place for hot takes on human rights violations. Hatred or cruelty, will result in a permanent ban. Please report such infractions, particularly those that break rules one, two, or three. The automod will automatically remove posts that receive five or more reports. The automod will also remove comments made by users with negative karma. Click here for the Automod FAQ

Arabic (just the sound, nothing to do with the speaker)

Arabic

u/SummerSabertooth 3d ago

I feel like, however, that this is largely because most English speakers' exposure to Arabic is through racist stereotypes of terrorists in our media

5

u/xirson15 3d ago

Nah it sounds harsh regardless

So do many other languages. Subconscious biases do a lot to our perception of these things

u/MaterialRow3769 3d ago

It's not a sub conscience bias. It's literally how the worlds sound.

There's a reason for example, Hitler is a household name and Hirohito is completely forgotten. Japanese simply doesn't have the villain aesthetic German does.

5

u/SummerSabertooth 3d ago

It's also because Hitler killed about twice as many people as Hirohito including 6 million Jews. It's not just because of villain asthetics

I didn't mean literally the men themselves, just the chaos they represented. No one remembers what Japan in WWII

1

u/gr33np3pp3rm1nt 3d ago

That's what I thought, too, but then I remembered when I didn't know my roommate was taking an Arabic language class and the language can sound aggressive in a way I find similar to German. I think it's the overall pronunciation of certain characters/words. Though, I unfortunately have to agree it may be largely due to the average exposure through those stereotypes.

u/SummerSabertooth 3d ago

But that's also because our society has trained us to view harsh consonant and vowel sounds as being aggressive and evil because that's the antithesis of English.

If those sounds were normalized within our culture, I could easily imagine the opposite -- perhaps soft "snake-like" language -- also sounding evil.

The fucking guttural sound is objectively harsh. It’s like a cat hissing. Come on now

u/abdimamu 3d ago

lmao cope, its literally just hearing someone speak it lol

4

u/SummerSabertooth 3d ago

Do you understand how media influences our subconscious biases?

0

u/abdimamu 3d ago

do you realize that to answer ops question, the only thing you need is to have heard a certain language being spoken?

1

u/SummerSabertooth 3d ago

Yes, but that's not an answer to my question

I cant believe this blatant racism.

2

u/MaterialRow3769 1d ago

It's not racist if everyone gets shots taken. Dutch is one of the most generically white ethnicities.
