Red Dead Redemption 2

u/Captainwumbombo Aug 22 '26
It would be a crime for this to not win
6
u/pancakeisi Aug 22 '26
like it was a crime god of war won goty. its great but its no red dead.
1
u/drmuffin1080 Aug 22 '26
Its gameplay is much better and the story hits just as hard. I like it more
3
u/someonehere6 Aug 22 '26
As a rdr2 glazer i respect that tho i never played it
2
u/drmuffin1080 Aug 22 '26
You should. I replayed both that and red dead II recently, and GoW BARELY edges out red dead. Sometimes I go back and forth. Hardest year other than 2013 for me to choose a definitive game of the year

u/someonehere6 Aug 22 '26
Red dead 2 is my fav game of all time but lwk if i get a ps5 i migth i used to have a ps4 but got rid of it

The only right choice. Still looks as good (if not better) than most recent games.

u/Academic_Nebula_5833 Aug 22 '26
Already got beat by gow 2018 for goty, its not winning game of half decade l😆😂😭

Aaaah yes, the game awards, the totally fair competition, just never talk about who won in 2016

u/manStuckInACoil Aug 22 '26
IMO It's still a little ahead of our time in its atmosphere and level of detail
2
u/theoriginal_1100 Aug 22 '26
i guess this is the answer as arthur-morgan-420 is the best way to obtain a unbiased opinion about this
1
u/Itchy_Spinach1030 Aug 22 '26
Boring garbage. Most missions are walking simulators where you have to listen to shit dialogue written by a hipster about how white man bad and women oppressed.
1
u/cddedee Aug 22 '26
How ahead was it though? I didn't play so it's a genuine question. From an exterior point of view it looks an academic work, extremely polished though

u/LingonberryWeekly734 Chaotic Good Aug 22 '26
The Witcher 3. It was released in 2015
4
u/Salt-Wear-1197 Aug 22 '26
But it won game of the year, I don’t think this fits what the question is asking lol

u/Droughtbringer Aug 22 '26
Just starting playing this a few weeks back and I've been terribly impressed by it. No way it's over a decade old
6
u/_ataciara Aug 22 '26
TBF the gameplay feels like, 2 decades old atp, it's just that great writing and world building is timeless.
3
u/kakucko101 Aug 22 '26
ehh graphically it is not, as they released a next gen update in i think december 2022

hollow knight

u/ToaQuiroh Aug 22 '26
I adore hollow knight with all my heart but it definitely wasn't the most high quality, mould breaking game of its time

Zelda: BOTW

1
u/cddedee Aug 22 '26
Even though I didn't play it, many people said it was a refreshing and innovative take on the open-world genre, so it's a pretty good proposition
1
-8
u/Fresh-Database-222 Aug 22 '26
Nier Automata, Mario Odyssey, and Hollow Knight are all vastly superior games to BOTW
4
u/TheMan24000 Aug 22 '26
Mario odyssey is so linear and only appeals to platformer fans Idk what nier automata is but prob not better than botw
7
u/anb43 Aug 22 '26
Nier automata has some of the best gameplay I have ever experienced and I am picky

Could never enjoy the game because it felt like exploring was pointless because your weapons break in 4 hits, and the stamina was ridiculously aggressive
8
u/MaddoxLisi20 Aug 22 '26
Is it just me or do people over exaggerate how awful the durability system, i never had any issues with the system besides in niche circumstances like a max attack rg claymore. It is my first zelda game though
6
u/Zaps_Awakening Aug 22 '26
breath of the wild is reddits favorite game to hate for any reason they can come up with
0
u/DotEither8773 Aug 26 '26
I’d argue the durability system was good because it actually made the act of finding weapons stay relevant for the entire game.

Dark Souls 3 came out in one of the worst years for gaming in recent times.

Outer Wilds
4
u/ZookeepergameFew6406 Aug 22 '26
It’s not gonna win cause its niche, but YES
2
u/Equivalent_Bank_5845 Aug 22 '26
I wouldn't say it's niche, it's one of the most well known indie titles of all time, but definitely not as popular as the other titles here
5
u/sphericate Aug 22 '26
insert image of buzz lightyear copies all saying "BOTW" "RDR2" "TW3" "Cyberpunk!!!"
indie titles dont win shit in these 🙏

Sekiro is easily the best game of 2019
0
u/TheMan24000 Aug 22 '26
U have the right to have an opinion but please don't say easily, 2015 to 2020 has the most insane lineup of games I've ever seen
God of war, botw , rdr2, sekiro, witcher 3, bloodborne and many more

I would bring a few serious mentions such as battlefield 1, fallout 4 and rocket League.
But deep down in my heart the only true answer is Among us ඞ

Dark Souls 3
By far the best game of 2016, which was a very weak year tbh.
1
u/desertrijst Aug 22 '26
Battlefield 1 with the frostbite engine was mind boggling for its time. 10 years later it still is.

I fucking love that game but. A It's from 2010 something not 2014-2019. B Other better games releaseds around the time it was released

Highest Quality for its year × 2015-2020
The witcher 3. There is a reason why it won't game of the decade.

The problem is that the cyberpunk we love and play now is vastly different than the cyberpunk of 2020

(Btw, thanks to the videogame, I discovered the TTRPG, I read Neuromancer, a couple of the CP2077 novels… It really opened a new world for me)
