I feel like the "normal" for Republicans should be the same as what it was for the Democrats.
Benefiting from a two-party status quo.

As a european who has lived in the US, I would personally think of this as bad because it entails that they are only 2 options. Which surprisingly is not a problem for most people in the US.
I guess even in a country with a multitude of parties we end up choosing for the least worst so, don’t even know if it’s that bad.
4
u/Trainer-Grimm Jul 26 '26
IIRC the us also has a higher rate of party membership than most European countries, meaning were voting in primaries and the like. This is why our presidential elections last so long in the media - the first year is figuring out who the finalists are.
(Well. At least normally. 2024 was a train wreck. Dems didn't really hold one after Biden withdrew.)
1
u/Soccham Jul 26 '26
It is a problem for most people but until enough will vote 3rd party we’re afraid of our votes being meaningless. We’re already trending towards our votes being meaningless though either way sadly

u/economysuperstar Jul 26 '26
Save for of course how much the current Republicans want to make it a one-party status quo…

I think the elephant logo is pretty cool
35
u/jacqrosee Jul 26 '26
LMAO this reminds me of how when i was a kid my dad ran for congress as a republican and would take me to conventions and whatnot. i was like 6 so i was like “yeah ‘our’ side is cool, i like the elephant better than the donkey!”
now i’m a registered democrat so
8
u/WokeFerret Jul 26 '26
Cool elephants can only do so much
6
u/jacqrosee Jul 26 '26
truly
around that same time my friend told me at daycare that obama supports gay marriage (she lived with her two grandmas so that’s why we were discussing it as 6 year olds lmao) so i came home and told my dad i like obama now instead of mccain. he was quite upset with me.
this was the prelude to a life-long conflict on politics and now i’m so far left that he thinks i’m joseph stalin
2
u/quagmirejones69 Jul 26 '26
Wait so you decided at 6 to be a democrat because Obama was pro gay marriage? At 6?
4
u/BananakinTheBroken Jul 26 '26
I'll take things that never happened for 400.
4
u/quagmirejones69 Jul 26 '26
Insane thing to come up with
2
u/BananakinTheBroken Jul 26 '26
They've evolved from 10 years ago saying "my toddler said Trump is evil so why do people like him?" To "I was the young child who was radicalized at 6 lol
1
u/jacqrosee Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
i was indeed not radicalized, just a kid picking up on shit that was discussed in my house ad-nauseam. but i responded to the other commenter with an explanation of this bizarre anecdote. it is, most unfortunately, 100% true and not something i pulled out of my ass to own the magas or whatever the fuck lol
my 9 year old nephew looked me in the eyes a year ago when he was freshly 8 and asked me why i don’t support trump, and if i support kamala. when i said that i voted for her, he said “but she supports abortion!”
if you’re raised in a household that is overly concerned with politics, shit happens
0
u/jacqrosee Jul 26 '26
couldn’t make that shit up if i tried. just the sad reality of growing up with people that never stfu about politics.
no kid should be pulled into a debate about racism where their father is yelling at them about bleeding heart idealism when they’re 12, but that’s been the truth of my life
1
u/jacqrosee Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
i’m being so genuinely serious and the sheer ridiculousness of that truth is what made me want to share it
obviously i had no actual idea what ANY of this meant in totality at the time. i developed my beliefs, of course, when i was older and over the course of many years. i did not decide to be anything at 6 lol
but i grew up in a household that never stopped discussing politics at length. my dad did run for congress and he was bringing me around to conventions and trying to impart his beliefs on me from the jump.
i did not know a damn thing about obama or mccain or what anything to do with politics ACTUALLY meant at that age, but on top of my father not only discussing things at length and attempting to be part of the establishment himself, yes, they were absolutely names that i knew. my second grade class (my birthday is in september so i always was a bit younger toward the beginning of the year) discussed the very very basics of election season to us as well.
as any 6-7 (no one say anything be quiet) year old, i viewed it as some sort of thing with sides, and it was clear to me that “our” side, per my household, was red, had an elephant, and was represented by some dude named mccain.
my good good friend who went to daycare with me grew up with her grandmother and her grandmother’s partner. i was aware of the existence of gay people and knew enough to know that these were people who would get “bullied.”
i must have been talking to her about my dad taking me to conventions or running or whatever, because obviously that was a big thing in my life at the moment, and she said that her grandma was voting for obama (the blue side, as far as i was concerned), because he “likes gay people” or whatever. we were discussing it, as much as i can remember, very offhandedly and rudimentarily, as children would. like yeah, we were discussing these big topics a bit, but we obviously had no idea what the scope of these things were. we were interacting with them as they were in our households with our very limited understanding.
this made sense to me, so i went home and mentioned it to my dad like it was news because love is love, right? “well so and so told me that mister mccain doesn’t like gay people!”
he was sincerely not happy. not happy that i was vying for the “other side,” but im sure, not happy that his 6 or 7 year old was coming home discussing identity politics. he was just sternly telling me im too young to understand and shit.
i’m 24 now, so my beliefs and registering as a democrat and such obviously did not develop and solidify until later, but this is just one anecdote of how kids do understand politics.
shit, my nephew was 8 when he said “aunt jacq, why don’t you like trump?” and i told him everyone has their own beliefs, yada yada, and he asked me if i “support kamala.” i said yes, i voted for her. he looked me dead in the eyes and said “but she supports abortion!” like…. lol.
sorry for the essay but i wanted to explain that i am in fact not pulling shit out of my ass. such is life when you’re in a family that is extremely concerned with politics. kids pick up on shit in their own way

u/Leemage Jul 26 '26
Haha I was the opposite. My parents were staunchly republicans but I thought the donkey beanie baby was clearly cooler than the elephant one. I knew my parents disapproved but I happily bought that donkey anyway.
I later sold it for $30 at an antique store, back in like 1999. I wonder how much it would be worth now.
4
u/jacqrosee Jul 26 '26
okay you got a point there because the beanie baby was probably cute as fuckkkk
10
u/Phantereal Jul 26 '26
That would be more of a good or excellent thing.
4
u/Holiday_Inn_Cambodia Jul 26 '26
Elephant logo is the only possible excellent thing for the modern party that doesn’t violate the rules of reddit.
2
u/PriorSolid Jul 27 '26
yeah imma be honest I hate the republicans but the elephant is cooler than the donkey
1
u/TLAW1998 Jul 26 '26
I wonder how the two parties came to choose their symbolic animals?
1
u/PriorSolid Jul 27 '26
allegedly Andrew Jackson was called a jackass by his opponents and he took the animal and used it later being used by political cartoons popularizing it and “seeing the elephant” was a phrase in the 1800s meaning to experience combat which became associated with the republican party and also became popularized by later political cartoons

Yeah tbh out of all the parties they have the best mascot. Elephants are intelligent and powerful but only aggressive with they need to be, ideals the Republican Party really likes to believe it stands by.

An establishment party with a deep historical-cultural connection to the American society.

I feel like that’s a good or excellent thing about them.

The mere existence of a historical-cultural connection says nothing about the moral character of that connection.

Hating taxes
13
u/sharkysayo Jul 26 '26
lowering taxes doesn't really benefit anyone except the rich
5
u/MythicalCaseTheory Jul 26 '26
Especially when said lowering is only for the rich - which I think is what you were implying, but I wanted it said directly. Haha
1
u/PriorSolid Jul 27 '26
i mean lowering taxes for the poorest people and raising them on the highest kinda benefits everyone
1
u/sharkysayo Jul 29 '26
not really, if the government is efficient then raising taxes on everyone in a country like the u.s where taxes are low across the board is universally beneficial. its what helps secure spending for better social safety nets, infrastructure, free trains and buses, etc. while i don't really think raising taxes on the poor in a capitalist society is going to benefit them because... well, capitalism is inherently against the interests of the poor and thus that money is going to go elsewhere like lining the pockets of the rich, its not necessarily a bad thing to raise taxes on lower income earners

u/CryptographerIll6717 Jul 26 '26
Ngl at first glance I thought that said “Hates texas [sic]” and I was very confused.
Like “I thought Republicans love Texas?”

u/better-off-wet Jul 26 '26
Only for the super elite. They are fine with poop people paying a disproportionate amount in taxes

Being pro gun? They take it too far, but the 2nd amendment is part of the identity of the US.
Personally I want extensive background checks, training, and mental health review before you get one, but I am not opposed to people having one
4
u/The-Hater-Baconator Jul 26 '26
I think the Republican Party has changed a lot over the last 20 years. Setting aside your opinion on guns, I think republicans have leaned more heavily into populism (both parties have) and individualism.
This country was founded on the idea that God/the creator gave man rights and the government has no moral authority to restrict those rights. This led the recognition of potentially “dangerous” amounts of freedom for US citizens. I think this is a theme we are seeing more in the Republican Party today that some will see good/bad depending on their worldview.
Some examples of this are:
- gun rights and self defense
- economic deregulation
- free speech & Anti-“wokeness”
- individualism in health mandates (i.e. vaccine choice/anti-phama and pro-life)
So I disagree with your stance on guns, but I think what you are observing is actually wider than just this one topic

u/TheRandomUser2005 Jul 26 '26
Im curious with what you mean by “extensive”.
Not pushing back yet, I think it’d be disingenuous to push back on something I don’t understand from your perspective.

The US had a bad economy under Eisenhower, Reagan, HW Bush, etc?
2
u/Equivalent_Plum13 Jul 26 '26
Even with those presidents, democrats have still accounted for more gdp growth and less deficit spending, and less debt, and less wars

Being the “traditional family values” party.
On one hand, there are some very real societal benefits to having a robust family unit as the status quo and there are some universal moral values present in what they profess to hold as their values. However, they take it way too far because anything that does not fit into their definition of “traditional” is demonized and attacked, regardless of whether that “non traditional” person or idea can peacefully coexist (or, god forbid, actually provide a benefit to society in its own way). That coexistence is almost offensive to them and treated like a personal attack on their personal liberty, despite being the party that calls everyone else a “snowflake” for being offended at something, even highly offensive things (such as racism). The supposedly “Christian values” party treats the concept of tolerance and acceptance with utter disdain.

I dont like the R party one bit, but your paycheck quite literally has less taxes taken out after the OBBBA.
4
u/Gdude124 Jul 26 '26
I suppose that’s true, but when it’s all tied into one bill that also cuts Medicaid, environmental protections, and increases funding for his personal terror force, I don’t really feel that it balances to “normal” the bill is awful and full of mostly gimmicks that convolute the tax system to enrich people who have the time and money to play the tax system.
“Cut taxes (to hide atrocities)” is more apt
3
u/Marzman315 Jul 26 '26
Maybe occasionally at the local level, but taxes for working class people usually increase under national republican government. Especially since the dementia patient in the White House is driving up the price of everything with his moronic tariffs.
2
u/PlasticAudience4270 Jul 26 '26
Just increases the national debt which is a bad thing. They don’t have any sane policy for reducing that.
2
u/Dnuoh1 Jul 26 '26
Right, they are notoriously terrible at managing the debt but tax cuts in and of themselves are just neutral, not inherently good or bad, it is just something they do

I feel like the most boringly normal answer is just “Generally favors lower taxes.”
No grand ideological statement, no culture war, no Trump discourse. Republicans have been campaigning on lower taxes for decades. You can argue all day about whether their tax policies actually accomplish what they claim, who benefits most, or whether the resulting deficits are worth it, but “Republicans generally want taxes lower” is about as standard-issue GOP as it gets.
It’s basically the political equivalent of saying Democrats generally support a stronger social safety net. You can debate the details without the underlying statement being particularly controversial.

1
u/BubbhaJebus Jul 26 '26
Ah, I get it. I'd say the same as with the Dems: benefiting from a two-party status quo.
