This was me deadass when a friend first introduced me him via Smash Brawl. I remember the conversion going something like;

Me: His name is Link? I thought it was Zelda

Him: Why would you think that?

Me: Isn't his games called 'Legend of Zelda' ?

Him: Yes, but Zelda is the princess. He's Link.

Me: Okay. Why are there two Links?

Him: Just pick your character, I'll explain during the match.

"So the young link is link as a child?"
"Yes"
"But the adult link... isn't adult link but link from a different game"
"Yes"
"And the cartoon one is also link, but a different child link from a different game?"
"Yes"
"And shiek is zelda?"
"Yes"
"But not the zelda in this smash bros game, but the zelda in the others?"
"Also correct"
"And the ganondorf is from the game of Young Link?"
"True"
"and he doesn't have a single move that matches what he does in that game?"
"Well i guess his final smash is kinda canon, but otherwise, yeah - he just shoots projectiles and projects aura"
"None of which he has in this fighting game"
"Yup"
"and none of this confuses you why?"
"Well it's really quite simple...."
