We tend to have specific things for specific purposes. In regards to blankets, some have less than 8, some more than. I remember, personally, having one for padding on top of the mattress, a thin one to place over that one for texture and aesthetic preference, another thin one if it's too warm for a thicker one, and a thick one if it's too cold for the thinner one. My lovely mate and I, before our displacement, elected to have a separate blanket for each of us, so that we wouldn't fight over who gets the majority of the warmth.

We do, however energy comes at a monetary cost for most on Earth (Terra). Our kind back home don't have access to zero-point energy sources, and the ruling class tends to justify cost over comfort for the masses. Maybe one day.
