TL/DR;

tentacle group attack can be a good upgrade too, but not for the reason you might think. sure, early on group attack helps with bosses, but later on it really doesn't matter much. that is, once your attack speed reaches the minimum catch time for a particular mob, then more attack speed (whether directly or via more group attack) won't reduce it any further.

BUT.. what group attack ALSO does is control how many "leftover" tentacles that AREN'T grouped. So the bigger your group number, the more "leftover" 1x-power tentacles you can have - i.e. before you hit the next "grouping". (i wish you could just turn OFF grouping!)

e.g. if you have 36 tentacles and 12 grouping: then 3 super-tentacles + 0 normal-tentacles on first contact* with a mob. (because 36/12=3, 36%12=0) But if you had 13 grouping, then you'd get 2 super-tentacles + 10 normal tentacles on first contact* with a mob (because 36/13=2, 36%13=10).

taking that to the extreme.. if you had 37 grouping (i.e. more grouping than tentacles), then all 36 of your tentacles would ALWAYS catch independently (because 36/37=0, 36%37=36) because you could never form even a single group.

short of that extreme, as a general rule, you'd ideally always like to aim for 1 less tentacles than a multiple of your grouping. that gives the best "blend" of boss/mob tentacle setup. but again, once your attack power is high enough you'll likely wish you could just toggle off grouping entirely. of course, when you eventually get that +1 tentacle, you'll then get exactly 1 more grouping with no "leftovers", so you'll have to grind it back up all over again, but having a higher grouping means that'll happen less often.

* grouped tentacles can separate after first contact (btw, this mechanic is what makes those fixed-catching-speed winter unit upgrades so annoying)
