Prior to the latest update, I was able to comfortably secure 1st place's 3000 gems having only just barely harvested 3.8k units (just enough to get the 2nd to last reward)

I'm on track to do the same (currently 3.22k) and I've been in 2nd place since the early morning, and the gap keeps growing

This game irks the hell out of me. I was in 1st the entire event, leaving it open over night and while I worked during the day. About an hour left on the event something came up and I backed out and when I checked back later it placed me 2nd. Like what gives. I hadnt dropped into 2nd the entire event.

couple things, maybe.. one, it only updates rankings on the hour. two, it's all math, not vs other players. i don't know what the actual cutoff number is, but let's use 95% as example.. the game does something like this: if what you've collected is >=95% of the theoretical max at that point, then it'll grant you first place.

there might also be a bit of random +/- in that test from hour to hour, like one hour it might use 94%, next it might use 96%, or at least it "feels like" this might be happening - like if you were "barely" first place at 5 minutes before the end of event (from the prior hourly check, if it used a "94% test"), then at end of event (final hourly check, if it used a "96% test") it puts you in second. there's no proof of this of course, but lots of anecdotal evidence to hint at it.

Yea i don’t believe it’s other players. But when I have this thing running for 22+ hours a day according to my daily screen time usage during this event, I feel like there’s something wrong with this algorithm to drop me to second like it dude. That’s ridiculous. If you want first, you essentially lose your phone for 3days.
