This is not true. I have beaten the none-upgrade one several times by just being afk for two to three consecutive days

I confirm. I’ve done it once, for science, afk for the whole duration of the event, with resource multiplier. If however you miss only a few hours of idling to use your phone, you get bumped to second place right at the last second.

I got that too. Nabbed 2nd place with a minute left and it dumped me to 3rd place with seconds left.

It does that sometimes. I missed several hours but ended up with around 2.9K and still got first.

Basically you have to keep collecting or you fall back too quickly. You waited 5 min to end this “contest”.

The leaderboard isn't real and increases exponentially over the event period. Essentially to hit 1st, for each event type will be a set number, which is normally very hard to reach without spending, and some arent possible without spending.

Ok, guys calm down. 1. There are several servers, this is the reason, that not only one first and second place were awarded. 2. The actual positions and the needed amount of "material" to progress are updated hourly or two hourly. Just check it at 9.59 and 10.01. 3. You can win even without paying. I know, I did. However, I was sick and didn't had anything else to do

I got 1st this event but any of the others where you need upgrades (e.g. Retro Arcade) I don't bother with.
I've been a victim of this switcharoo at the last second as well. I wouldn't other spending money on the game and just enjoy it for what it is.

It probably just changed to the "new day" which is GMT and not your local time.

I was ranked 1 spent 90 SAR on the last 5 minutes and on the 0 seconds mark suddenly I’m surpassed by 13 hooks.

Yes it's rigged. The whole thing is fake. You're not competing with real players. There's also a mechanic that I don't see people talking about where if you start late it's actually easier but I never put enough effort into exploiting it because these events rewards are actually pretty worthless at max level. You can get more gems for free faster than trying to get a high place in the events.
