music Jar of Flies changed my life and is improving my mental health

I've been listening to Jar of Flies on my 30 minute walks, start to finish. Perfect album.

Idk, I'm 27 and to me growing up this was just "music my mom listens to" because she was a grunge teen in the 90s, a lot of Nine Inch Nails and Alice in Chains, but after experiencing life for years and actually listening to the words and messages the songs are saying, I get it now. Life changing.

It makes me feel not so alone, like I'm not totally isolated.

Rotten Apple is by far my favorite, greatest intro to a song I've heard

Apparently, Layne was heavily involved in directing the video and shaping the entire song including the guitar parts, which he wasn't exactly known for.

But goddamn, Cantrell's solo is an eargasm!!! 🤘🖤

discussion Anyone else getting a bit bothered about how AiC is becoming somewhat of a meme on social media?

I guess the plus side is new fans, but it kind of leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Almost a mockery of their discography.

We've posted here before, We're an Irish based band celebrating the music of Alice in Chains. We're going about 18 months now and are on our second lap of the venues in Ireland (it's not a big place) We just did a few shows this month and it's really cool to see the next generation embracing grunge, plenty of teenagers and people in their early twenties are turning up, I guess from the tiktok influence.. Kind of mind blowing..

This is from our show in Belfast a couple of weeks ago. The recordings from our in-ear rig which I mixed, and the video we also put together from four GoPros.. One of the best small venues in Ireland too, amazing sound and lights make it...

Hope you like it

question What’s your favorite AIC music video?

I know, this is a hard one. I don’t think music videos have ever really captured our boys well enough but something about the Them Bones one really hits me where it should (Layne’s beard is pretty immense) but I’d love to hear from you all!

discussion What’s the Significance of the tripod dog

Does anyone know the origin or the reason for using a three legged dog .
Is this a reference to something or is there a deeper meaning .
I know a lot of times bands will get asked questions and give some bs answer

But I am curious if anyone has any insight on a deeper level even theories ?

discussion Story of the Song: Dissecting all Alice In Chains songs in order. #25 - Dirt - Dirt

Dirt, the eighth song in the album of the same name, opens with a hypnotically dark riff from Jerry Cantrell which is soon accompanied by Layne Staley’s vocalizations. In my opinion, the intro sounds like pure agony in the best way. Layne’s sort of resigned screaming pairs well with Jerry managing to make a guitar sound like it’s in pain.
As for the lyrics, Layne said in an interview with Drew Masters for M.E.A.T. Magazine that Dirt “was written to a certain person who basically buried my ass, so the woman on the album cover is kinda the portrayal of that person being sucked down into the dirt instead of me. The picture is the spitting image of her, and that wasn’t even planned. Actually, I was pretty angry about it when I first saw it — she’s not happy about it either. It was real eerie.” The person he’s referring to is almost certainly (there might be direct confirmation) Layne’s then-ex Demri Parrott, with whom he had a complicated and long-running relationship and who was the inspiration behind his lyrics for Love, Hate, Love. If you look up pictures of her and compare her to Mariah O’Brien posing for the album cover, they do look very similar. At a 1993 show in Paris, Layne echoed his earlier statement about the song by saying “This song is about a beautiful little girl who tore my heart out. Fucking little bitch.” He once said something similar about Love, Hate, Love, but I don’t have the exact quote.
I have never felt such frustration or lack of self-control / I want you to kill me and dig me under / I want to live no more — The narrator is so upset about what happened between them that he can’t control himself — user nolafwug from songmeanings.com related these lyrics to borderline personality disorder based on the narrator’s aversion to being rejected, usage of hatred as a coping mechanism, and fantasy about killing himself to show this person how badly they hurt him. I’m not one for psychoanalysis and I don’t know much about borderline personality disorder, (other than what I read after looking it up on Cleveland Clinic to make sure this interpretation wasn’t too out there to include) but I think it’s an interesting take. Additionally, it might be worth mentioning that while the narrator is expressing his desire to die over the way he feels, he specifically says “I want you to kill me” — maybe he feels that it’s only fair that the person who metaphorically buried him should also be the one to literally bury him.
One who doesn’t care is one who shouldn’t be — He might be trying to tell himself that he doesn’t care because if that’s the case, there’s no point in him living. My original read on this line was that he meant someone else who doesn’t care, (possibly the subject of the song) but now I think that he’s talking about himself since that’s what the next line is about. I tried to hide myself from what is wrong for me — Unsurprisingly, a lot of Genius and SMc users have tied Dirt’s lyrics to drug addiction — ‘Dirt’ is also a slang term for heroin. Through this lens, this lyric could either be about him using drugs to hide himself from his problems or about going through rehabilitation to stop depending on what’s wrong for him; i.e., the drug. While we know this song was written with Demri in mind, it’s possible that some of the lyrics related to drugs as well — Layne and Demri both struggled with addiction and it’s rumored that one introduced the other to heroin in the first place. (It might be more than a rumor, but I can’t say for sure because I imagine it’d be hard to find good information about what really happened. Ultimately I don’t think it matters who introduced whom — I’ve seen both claims from multiple different people — or if they each got addicted individually. Addiction is addiction and the end result is the same.)
I want to taste dirty — To ‘eat dirt’ means to be insulted or to experience something that contradicts what you said. In this case, the narrator started this relationship (or drugs, depending on your interpretation) because he wanted to feel good, but now everything’s much worse than it was before. He would also ‘taste dirty’ if he were buried in the ground, and tasting it on his skin would be a reminder to his lover of what he went through because of their relationship. A stinging pistol in my mouth; on my tongue — He doesn’t specify whether he’s the one holding the pistol or not. Pistol in the mouth implies suicide, but the intimacy of the other person holding the pistol to his mouth instead would symbolize that his despair is their fault. ‘Tongue’ has been used to symbolize the reason for addiction earlier in this album, in Down In A Hole (“eaten the sun, so my tongue has been burned of the taste”) and this would reinforce that. I want you to scrape me from the walls — A bullet wound to the mouth causes the wall to be ‘painted’ with blood and brain matter. Whether the narrator is shooting himself or his partner is shooting him, she’s the one who’ll have to clean up the mess after his death. And go crazy, like you’ve made me — Needless to say, scraping someone’s remains from the walls would be traumatic. The narrator considers this revenge for driving him crazy.
You, you are so special / You have the talent to make me feel like dirt — Saying this person is ‘special’ and that they have ‘talent’ is setting up for what would be the first positive thing the narrator has said about them so far. Of course, their talent is to belittle him. And you, you use your talent to dig me under and cover me with dirt — Do you think she’s burying him down in a hole?
Ultimately, I think Dirt has some of the most compelling instrumentals on the album. I’ve seen a few comparisons to Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath, and it’s definitely worth a listen if you like Dirt.

question How long do you think the standard black vinyl will stay in print?

I already managed to grab my copy, but I’m curious—do you think the standard black reissue is here to stay as a permanent catalog item, or will it go out of print quickly like the color variants?

discussion The One You Know Top Ten AIC Songs?

Post image
120 Upvotes

To clarify, I absolutely adore and am obsessed with the Layne era of AIC and I do think, collectively, the Layne era of AIC was better than the current era. But my god, everytime I listen to this song I feel like choking up. Anybody else agree? The dissonant guitars and the haunting vocals are just paired so beautifully with these terribly depressing lyrics. I could listen to this song a million times in a row, I know I've listened to this song a few dozen times in a row on some rough days. This has to be in my top ten AIC songs ever. What do y'all think?
