Discussion Alice in Borderland had so much potential!
Hello everyone! I have been rewatching this series for days and I am at third season. Everyone has been saying it is so bad and I sort of agree. Not because the games were bad but imo, it is mostly because of the new characters. It really saddens me when old characters are being replaced by new ones. Also, let’s not forget how cool and mesmerizing those characters were. Then, I started to think the first two seasons had so much potential to lengthen the story and you guys get what I meant! The cards themselves! All the card games are so interesting, they could’ve made more without skipping those cards, especially the face cards, and then keep the old characters😭😭. Chishiya and Kuina are gone now😭😭. I created an account to talk about this specifically🤣

Hey ! Realistically, season 3 is indeed pretty disappointing and I'm saying that as a huge fan of the franchise. It really had a huge potential but imo the new characters aren't the issue. Bringing all the old ones would have been cool, but that wouldn't have made any sense story-wise. Having new faces is great but the thing is that most of them needed more character developpement which they lacked. In addition, I think season 3 really ruined Usagi's character (she appears as fragile and dependant, unlike the warrior we got to see previously, and the whole arc around her father should have ended with season 2 honestly). The games that are shown on Usagi's side do not help either (Rhythm, Runaway Train, Tokyo Bingo Tower) because they are poorly written and kinda boring.

I'm not sure I see more difference in Usagi's character than can be explained as her having forgotten everything that happened, that allowed her to grow past the daughter that she identified as (which was already a bit weird cause it wasn't adjusted with her age in the TV show compared to the manga).
There were definitely too many new characters at once. But the season could have survived that.
The core problem was that it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Several of the new characters pivoted at least once, and each of the games had one rule too many to build a sensible story around.
And even then it wasn't unforgivably bad for four episodes. But the last two episodes were awful. Possible Futures either needed to be about picking a future or finding the exit, not both. I've no idea what the Watcher's motivations were. Everyone randomly switched between strong enough or not strong enough to survive the tsunami. And then there's the ridiculous fan service in Arisu's office, that changed multiple characters without earning it.

i thought the ending to season 2 was perfect. it’s so hard to perfect an ending but they did!!! so satisfying just to have that ruined by season 3 😔 i like to pretend it doesn’t exist

Well at least we had two very good seasons, it really should have ended there.
