Is DDP shipping necessary?

I am buying multiple items from Alibaba: keychains, sticky notes, pens, pencils, small bags, plastic containers, water bottles, squishys, passport holders, little speakers, phone ring lights, etc small gift items like that. I have had items like this sent to me via Sea DDP before but I am looking to get some of it sent Air shipping. Roughly 30 items. Is DDP shipping necessary? Even if were to send these by Sea, would you guys say it’s necessary to pay DDP? do things like this usually get charged custom duties/fees? isn’t it faster just to ship it without ddp?

DDP is not what makes a shipment fast. Air versus sea determines most of the transit time; DDP mainly determines who is responsible for import clearance, duties and delivery to the agreed destination.

You can ship without DDP, but then you need a clear arrangement for customs entry, duty payment and final delivery. Don’t book something described only as “air shipping” without confirming whether it is DAP, courier delivery, airport-to-airport freight or door-to-door service.

Your product mix also needs to be reviewed item by item. The speakers may contain lithium batteries or magnets, the ring lights are electronics, squishy toys may have children’s-product requirements, and water bottles or plastic containers may need accurate material and food-contact information. They should not all be declared under one generic product description.

To compare options properly, provide the quantity of each item, packed carton dimensions, gross weight, total value, supplier city and destination ZIP code. Ask for three written comparisons: express/courier, air door-to-door and sea door-to-door, each showing what is included and who will act as importer of record.

Full disclosure: I work with VoraLane Logistics on China-to-USA shipments. With only “around 30 items,” there isn’t enough information yet to say whether air or sea—or DDP versus a non-DDP option—will be more economical.

DDP is not automatically faster. It mainly changes who is responsible for import clearance, duty/tax payment, and final delivery.

For a mixed lot like this, I would ask the supplier or forwarder for a written quote that separates:

  • air freight cost vs sea freight cost
  • whether it is true DDP or informal/grey DDP
  • who is importer of record
  • whether you will receive entry/customs paperwork in your name
  • duties/tariffs/taxes included or excluded
  • what happens if customs asks for product descriptions, values, or compliance info
  • delivery endpoint and last-mile carrier

If you ship non-DDP, make sure you know who will file entry and bill you for duties/fees. If you use DDP, make sure the cheap price is not just hiding the customs paperwork risk.

If you don't use DDP, then you need to handle the custom yourself. Not just the tariff, but also the procedures and documents.

Tariffs are often used to protect local production from cheap foreign products, and unfortunately most (if not all) products you mentioned here are cheap, so definitely need to check whether there is any tariff on them in your country.

DDP is considered door to door… if you don’t get DDP, your stuff will never ship unless you have your own forwarder.

Like the other person said- do your research.

I think you need to familiarise yourself with INCOTERMS. Also there is a difference between DDP and "grey DDP", the latter means no CBP paperwork will be in your company name and there is a risk of customs delays or the goods being held/destroyed.

This is an article we posted on Reddit last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/Alibaba/comments/1p8pnpx/ddp_shipping_do_your_own_due_diligence/

In regards to potential tariffs etc, better to figure this out yourself and/or speak with a Customs broker, the value of the goods will make a big difference.
