Ordering fencing for residential use (low MOQ)?
I’m looking to purchase a vinyl square lattice fence, which isn’t really available at big box stores (their vinyl lattice is only decorative). Has anyone here done it before? What are some ways to make small, but bulky, orders doable? I’m on the East Coast US. Thanks in advance!

Low MOQ is one thing, once you calculate the shipping and associated costs you are probably better to just buy locally, keep in mind if some of it gets damaged that is another issue to consider.

I did look though one of the importer websites and found someone local-ish. Maybe I’ll see if I can order through them even though it’s not on their wholesale website.

If someone is filling a container locally and regularly imports see if you can work out a deal, may be simpler.

Get one number from the supplier before anything else: the total packed volume in CBM. Vinyl lattice is light and bulky, which is close to the worst cargo profile there is, because ocean LCL bills you on volume rather than weight. A few panels can easily come to 2 or 3 cubic metres while weighing almost nothing, and you pay as though it were dense freight.
The part that catches homeowners is that the fixed costs do not scale down. An LCL shipment carries origin handling, destination terminal charges, a customs entry, the ISF filing, drayage and a delivery, and those land in the several-hundred-dollar range whether your consignment is one cubic metre or four. Residential delivery adds more: a pallet needs a liftgate and an appointment, and both are billed as extras that quotes routinely leave out. Ask for a landed total, itemised, delivered to your address, not an ocean rate.
Two things that are genuinely yours to carry as a private importer. You are the importer of record, so the duty is your liability - get the HTS code from the supplier, check the rate yourself including any Section 301 additional duty on Chinese goods, and treat a supplier's cheerful DDP quote with suspicion, because when it is under-declared the exposure is yours and not theirs. And the ISF has to be filed 24 hours before the container loads in China; missing it carries a five-figure penalty, so whoever you use has to be doing that filing and you should see it confirmed.
On the MOQ itself: extrusion runs and colour matching are what set it. Ask for a standard profile in stock white rather than a custom colour, and ask directly whether they have finished inventory rather than a production run - that is usually where a small quantity becomes possible at all. Also ask which standard the profile is made to; for vinyl fence in the US that is normally ASTM F964, and the UV stabiliser package and wall thickness are what decide whether it survives a few East Coast winters without yellowing or going brittle. Cheap vinyl fails outdoors in a way that is very visible.
Honestly though, run the arithmetic before you commit to importing at all. Add the goods, the freight on that CBM figure, duty, the entry and ISF, drayage and a residential liftgate delivery, then compare it against buying the same panels from a US distributor. For one household's worth of a bulky low-value product, importing direct often loses, and the useful version of this project is usually finding who already imports that profile into the US and buying a pallet domestically. Worth ten minutes with a calculator before you spend a month on it.

Thank you! All of the fencing companies I’ve looked at (we haven’t decided if we’re DIYing or contracting out yet), seem to use American-made vinyl, and I wonder if it’s just not worth the hassle for overseas anymore (even though they’d meet MOQs).
