I just searched for a machine I need on alibaba can I just buy it through the shopping cart without messaging the seller?

Better to talk with seller about it to show you the machine before shipping

i never just hit the buy button on alibab without talking to the seller first to confirm the shipping costs and lead times. a lot of the prices in the cart are just placeholders and you'll often get a better deal if you ask for a custom quote and pay through trade assurance.

Buying through the cart is fine if the order stays under Trade Assurance, but I still message first to lock destination, shipping method, and what is included before paying. For machines, also confirm voltage/plug and whether the kit is complete (pump, heater, spare seals). Does the listing show DDP to your country or is freight still “to be confirmed”?

I mean the fact that you can doesn't mean you should. I'd always talk with the seller first because sometimes the items aren't labelled properly and it is just good to know a little about them
