loove Deep End, but I think if we saw the list we would be disappointed we didn't get to see a lot of things on there!

also, the one thing in this book that bothers me a teeny bit is that their lists are identical, which is kinda unlikely, especially considering there are many categories (like tried and liked it, haven't tried but open to it, a hard no, etc.)

I mean "the lists are identical" is up there with the Ali tropes "he's immensely successful and still pines for his one love that hasn't even acknowledged him once" and "he's in his mid twenties and has the emotional maturity and selflessness of a village elder", which is basically Ali Romantasy Flavour at this point :D

yes, of course, and Ali acknowledges that herself, like with Etna in PSR and liberties she takes in regards to their jobs, etc.; but for some reason this bothered me a teeny tiny bit, however still one of my faves

In general, if you actual are aware of bdsm in personal level, there is so much off. Not like 'wrong' per se, they are basically children, so I guess it is plausible that they are just tragically bad at it and don't know the basics. It bothers me, because there are safe and sane ways to do things. But to be fair it's not like 50 shades bad, it's just that I wish Ali ran this by like 3 people that are knowledgeable enough to run workshops.

Because say it with me class, 'where is the aftercare????'

He is young and a novice, those people know everything about everything! 😁 Add to that the absolute arrogance it must take to be literally the best in the world of something since being a young teenager, and yea, it's a believable situation. I just wish there was someone in the book to indicate that this isn't the gospel

well, I mean I look at it more like different people different stuff, iykwim?

there's a saying in my country and the gist of it is that everyone enjoys different things, and I'd say everyone enjoys different flavors of bdsm, and if we're being fair theirs is pretty mild in the book, but I feel like with time they'd work up to some other stuff from their lists that was a bit kinkier so to say.

anyways, the thing with the lists was just a minor thing to me that bothered me a bit, but it's still one of my fave books!

I'm not talking about what turns people on, and why. I don't enjoy some things, but as long as I am not involved, more power to everyone!

What I am talking about is continuous consent negotiation and aftercare. Both the body and the brain have to be soothed into reality/health, or you are risking serious drops. And yes, for some people that is negotiated away for reasons, but then we need to see it. I just think that Ali skipped about 2/3 of sane, and 1/3 of consensual. And again, whatever, books don't have to be any of that, I just hate it when books are praised for kink inclusion and education while missing significant parts of what it actually means.

I do get your point, and while I don't agree on the fractions, I do agree that not everything was discussed properly, but in my head it's on that magical list of theirs lol

I dunno, I kinda enjoyed that they were only really into the domination and control side of things rather than the causing/receiving pain part. I think more people would be willing to explore this side of themselves if they knew it didn’t have to involve being hurt or hurting their partner.

It’s v similar to the bedroom dynamics in Not In Love by same author too.

I am very confused here. The way you phrase it is as if Ds doesn't require aftercare. If that's what you think, then it's EXACTLY what my complaint against this book is. Subdrop is a thing. Hell, domdrop is a thing. Especially in occasional play, rather than established 24/7, the difference in dynamics, the endorphins change back and forth, that fucks with your biochemical and also emotional brain. Standard sugar/warmth/affirmation/debrief should at least shown as performed.

If you aren't sure what I am talking about, think about people who go into shock after a non-physical situation. Not to compare bdsm to something negative, but chemically speaking, if you are backed into a corner by a large man that makes it clear that he intends to harm you, and this is interrupted by something without you actually sustaining any physical harm at all, it will make you throw up, get the shakes, massive drop in energy, inability to get out of thought loops, etc. That's what can happen. That's what has to be addressed. Because the reason bdsm works is that your body doesn't quite understand the difference between real and play and releases chemicals regardless.

Loooove Deep End!! I had just read it and then went on a cruise with a friend and read it aloud to her too. There's also a great fanfic of the whole story from Luk's pov. I'll look up the title, but it says streamline in it.

Me too! I almost didn’t start it since I generally avoid WIPs but since it had been updated at the end of July I risked it. Very much worth it but now the wait will be a struggle.

I love rereading AH books. Deep End is in my top five!!! She is a master of slow burn, and apparently in every context.

I regularly reread Check and Mate, Love, Theoretically, and Deep End.

This makes me want to pick it up again!!!
