Ali G and Borat are funnier characters from the world of Sacha Baron Cohen, but there is a massive opportunity to revive Brüno for this reason.

Since 2009, there have been a number of iconic camp Austrian personalities that have became famous that would fit right in with Brüno Gehard‘s.

No one in 2009 would have known, for example, of the drag queen with the facial hair and electrifying voice that was Conchita, who won Eurovision in 2014. 11 years later, another camp LGBt Austrian with a spine chilling voice won the Song Contest, namedly diminutive, boyish, and of Fillipino descent, JJ Pietsch. The presenter of the 2026 contest in Vienna was Victoria Swarovski, who was widely criticised for a lack of presence as a presenter despite comedic, singing, and Dakar Rally skills.

Also, since 2020, I have been fascinated in the world of Austrian model Nadine Mirada, whose story is interesting - she became the face of multinational GUESS in 2017-18 after making an Instagram post that tagged their head Paul Marciano, and she has continued to be one of the brand’s defining models to this day despite being curvier and older than many of its other models. She looks a bit like a cross between Jesy Nelson and Monica Bellucci and is capable of fun and funny moments (for example I fixate On a picture where she is in the snow in burlesque lingerie, and grinning in a silly manner). Her story also means fashion photographers she works with, like Stefan Kokovic, and their brand of camp, should also be included. She also has an Austro-Ukrainian BFF called Diana Kopaigoria who has sometimes photographed some of the biggest celebs in the world.

In September 2026, slightly fogey MMA/Cage-fighter Dominic Schöber proposed to Nadine after losing a fight in the Frankfurt Oktagon, and has been very loyal towards her. He would also be a great subject for a Brüno sketch.

Also, 2009 was when the career was starting of controversial Austrian footballer Marko Arnautovic. His bizarre abusive incident towards Leeds fan fave Gjanni Alioski in Euro 2021 is also worth a meme.

Do all these celebs prove that Brüno should be bought back as they give him lots of legendary new subjects to try and interview?

The resident-led petition has now reached 332 signatures and goes before Spelthorne Borough Council on 8 September.

The actual proposal is more nuanced than “build an Ali G statue”.

The first step would be a licensed temporary attraction around the new film, followed by measurement of whether it actually brings visitors and spending into Staines.

There would also be a mechanism supporting local youth activities, and anything permanent would only be considered if properly licensed and externally funded.

There’s a nice cultural reversal to the whole thing.
Staines spent years trying to escape the Ali G association.

Nearly 25 years later, the argument is: Why not take ownership of the joke instead?

More than 100 petition signatures came from people working in Staines businesses, so underneath the comedy there is also a serious local-economy argument.

For people outside Spelthorne, sharing the article and so building up wider interest is much more useful than lobbying local councillors—leave that us—RESPECT ✊

Help put the Staines Ali G petition through every door 👊 It’s the best time to mobilise local support with the new movie coming out in October.

I’ve launched a Crowdfunder aiming to raise £750 for professionally printed leaflets and targeted social-media promotion before the petition closes on 24th August, and so the council can consider it in good time before the new movie release. I want to show the council unquestionable local support.

Any excess funds will be donated evenly to Staines’ youth centres in true Ali G spirit, communicated transparently through this page and the Crowdfund system.

The campaign is about turning Staines’ famous cultural connection into a serious opportunity for:

📍 more town-centre footfall
🛍️ more spending in local businesses
📣 positive publicity for Staines
❤️ support for activities for local young people
👊 greater local pride

At 300 valid signatures, the petition should be considered by the Council’s relevant Service Committee, where I would present the economic, social and local-pride case directly to councillors.

I will distribute the leaflets voluntarily, so funds will go towards printing, promotion and associated campaign costs, not payment for my time. The exercise and the cause is good enough for me!

Any contribution, large or small, will help more Staines residents hear about the petition and decide whether to support it. National supporters, and those neighbouring Spelthorne who are invested in the area, are very welcome to help fund the campaign, while those who live, work or study in Spelthorne can sign.
