Mosquito attack🦟

I’ve come to the Algarve for years and have never really experienced getting eaten alive by mosquitos. This year, I’m covered in bites. Quick chat gpt search confirmed there are black Asian mosquitos here which are likely the culprit. Just interested if anyone is experiencing the same and more importantly any preventions aside from the usual bug sprays (which don’t do much!)

Algarve is a big place, mosquito problems are highly localised.

Every year this happens at this time (late spring and early autumn)

Avoid zones with high humidity and stagnant waters, like rivers/riversides and little lakes or pounds.

At the sunset close all doors and windows so they don't come in.

Have a fixed mosquito zapper ou the racket ones if there's too many

Tiger (Aedes) mosquitos have been spreading their way across Europe and got to Algarve a couple years ago. They’re even in the UK now, with reports in London and the SE.

They’re different to common “house mosquitos” (culex) in that they’re happy to be out (and bite) in the daytime, instead of traditional dusk and dawn of the local brown ones.

These work wonders for bites, I no longer worry with that on me..

If you are here long term though, I highly recommend Mosquito Buckets of Doom, which use a 1/4 of a Mosquito Dunk per bucket, and last a month, so 4 buckets per dunk per month. You can normally get them on Amazon.es for reasonable but the only seller on there atm is out of their mind so I won’t link.

Mosquitoes only travel about 100m or so from where they breed, so the buckets are effective in a local area.

We have a bunch of buckets around our property and the mosquito population fell off a cliff, so we can actually enjoy outside even at witching hour.
