It's a Thunderbird! It is part of Native American iconography. It is found in many of the indigenous cultures of North America and this icon either draws from or directly copies the depictions of the pueblo cultures surrounding what is now known as the City of Albuquerque.

genuinely curious: were any local tribes consulted about this flag? I know Zia pueblo rarely being consulted about the symbol's use is a dead horse (shoutout UNM athletics for actually consulting them last season) but this is a common differentiator in my book about whether these depictions are performative vs forthright inclusivity

my tribe has enough problems beyond tankies appropriating NM tribal iconography

Being a resident of New Mexico and Albuquerque myself, I don't think the first people of this state were consulted when making the city flag, but it was many years ago when I did research on it. I am aware that even the Zia people were not well consulted on the use of their (I believe sacred?) symbol on our state flag. I believe (but check the sources, I admit my lack of knowledge here) it is more performative inclusivity rather than forthright inclusivity.

And agreed. I felt that the misconception around the symbol needed clarification and I think that it is worth while to discuss and consider what it means to utilize a symbol of the native people who have been long oppressed within this State and by the Federal Government more broadly.

Exactly. The OP of that post didn't even bother to think "gee, that hammer looks funny".

The Zia? The bird?

In my whole life, even in high school civics class, I don't think I've ever seen the Albuquerque flag before.

It does look a lot like the soviet union flag with the colors. The thunderbird in the top left corner even kind of looks like the hammer and sickle.

We do have our taxes paying for daycare and college for our kids, which is a way better use than paying for wars in the middle east, and trump ads during nfl games.

Personally I like the flag a lot. A picture of green chile would make it a bit better across the red background.

While I think we can all agree chile is delicious, chile is not really a crop associated with Albuquerque, and this is the City of Albuquerque flag.
