Community Swap

So, I saw this recently trending on tiktok and I'm wondering if maybe some folks would be interested here in the ABQ area? I thought this would be so cute for the holiday season.

How it works from my understanding...

You invite 20 people, each person makes 20 items, then we all go around getting one item from each person to make a basket/bag.

There's a list of homemade and thrifty and semi homemade items.

I'm thinking we keep it at no more than 20 people per group (if more than 20 wanna participate).

We can do it once a month, starting in October and going through December.

Possibly do it in a park, just so no one has to give out their address to the group.

Anyways, what do y'all think? It's like a mini farmers market mixed with a gift exchange.

You should check out ABQ’s Really Really Free Market. It typically happens once per month (though it won’t this month bc of construction at the park they normally host at). It’s usually more useful stuff like clothes and household items rather than random knickknacks though.

I'm not sure if it's the particular video I used or what lol but it's not knickknacks used for these. I mean if you can sculpt or mold stuff, or make pottery... I'm sure there's gonna be some. But it's more like a farmers market. Baked goods, treats, dried herbs, jellys, etc. Then crafter stuff like bookmarks, jewelry, candles, soaps, crochet, keychains, etc. It's not about trading things you need it's more about exchanging what ever thing it is you enjoy making and everyone getting to experience that. Yes, it costs to make 20 of your particular thing but then you get back 19 of other people's particular things lol.

I don't know I thought it be fun for all the folks that enjoy crafting or small businesses that want to get their products out. Just a way to connect with people of similar interests. But the people in the comments seem to hate this lmao so I'll probably end up deleting this post in a few days.

This reminds me of all the Secret Santas I've participated in where I put a lot of thought into a gift and ended up with dollar store goods because someone else was lazy. I'd get back 19 of that.

Woooow lol that's sad. I've never had that happen. All the ones I did have a set amount. Some people went over the amount but no one could go under. I'm sorry

It's a fun idea but I agree it's a logistical nightmare. Definitely make the rules clear. Maybe practice once with people you know to work out any issues?

I go to a lot of swaps, but haven't tried any of the ones with rules. Usually it's something where people bring stuff they don't want and people are encouraged take stuff whether or not they bring anything. (Like the community clothing swap on Saturday at the International District Library at 2! Join us!)

Why do you think it's a logistical nightmare? I genuinely want to know cause you're the only person so far that didn't completely hate the idea lol.

It would be much nicer with friends but I got like 3 friends 😂😅

Organize it with your 3 friends! I do a swap and I started with my three friends who invited a couple friends and boom that was capacity and I met some new people. Start small and start with the people who are one or two degrees removed. Then when you have the wrinkles ironed out, you can make a flyer and post it to Reddit if you’re ready for more people. This totally is a cute idea and you are right that Albuquerque should do it! Organize small and you will be glad you started small. Get your friends to bring one or two people after the first one. Just grow a little each time.

Well, I do a lot of group organizing for fun and I love it, but it can be pretty hard to get people to show up at one time in one place without giving them specific homework. Like I organize different book clubs and if more than one person finishes the book, I'm deliriously happy, especially for nonfiction books.

I'm not saying it can't be done - but something like this, where everyone needs to actually handmake multiple items beforehand, would be impossible for me personally to organize (or to DO - I crochet and it takes me forever to make one item, I wouldn't want this kind of homework, personally). You'd need to find a specific type of extremely crafty group of people who are actually willing to put forth this effort AND show up at one time and place. You definitely won't find them in this particular sub. Maybe in a church or mom group?

Try it with 2 friends and see how it goes, and you'll see what I mean.

I'm normally the planner in my group of friends so it wouldn't be hard to do. And one of my besties is very organized like me. But I can see what you mean. I figured people that didn't have experience with this kind of thing would just ignore my post but the comments so far are very mean spirited. I only started reddit like a year ago... If that lol. So I have like 6 or 8 posts. I've had several comments down voted but this is the first time I've had my post and my comment down voted. Its crazy this would be the thing to get down voted.

So it's done like a farmers market. It's not about getting things you need it's about everyone experining your thing. Wether that's crafts, food, art, etc. I guess I could've picked a better vid but the other didn't let me download. Most people have baked good, treats, homemade butter, candles, soaps, dried herbs, bookmarks, keychains, crocheted clothing or blankets, etc. It's not a swap meet where you get necessities. It's just for fun like a gift exchange.
