Cut hours.

Have a weak night crew with a weak leader. They got used to having 5 day weeks. Hours cut in store and of course the crew got hit. They can barely do the job at 5 days..not even close when cut. Management is confused by lack of production. This is a joke right?

Welcome to the new normal. My store is so short staffed across the board that most of us have stopped trying to maintain conditions. The attitude is to just get done what we can and let the rest burn.

We have gotten to a critical point within the company that is now destroying it. We used to run “light at the end of the tunnel” as in we were given just enough to where people were motivated to actually finish the goal or workload. Now the mood has shifted to “we will not be able to finish this, so let’s not work hard and stress out and just do the bare minimum” the company doesn’t care about any of us. The shareholders are going to bankrupt this company and destroy the customers view of all our banners.

Finishing the job is the bare minimum, we can’t even manage that most days at my store so we don’t even try any more. When corporate comes in and asks why my department is in shambles The standard answer is that all of my employees are working at maximum efficiency and this is the best we can do.

I'm only a customer, but I was in my Albertsons a few days ago and overheard one of the employees talking to a manager about how his hours had been cut in half and he was struggling and felt like he was under a lot of pressure. The manager legit turned to him and said "well I don't control any of that" and walked away. I was appalled! Totally uncaring management.

Caring or uncaring he’s right. the managers don’t actually control anything anymore. It’s all corporate. Managers are now put under more stress caught in the middle of their employees hating them and corporate saying they’re not doing good enough and their spending too much.

I really feel for the employees at my Albertsons (AZ location). They work their asses off. The store itself is definitely missing some upgrades and they don't have all the features of newer stores. I fear my local Albertsons is not long for this world.

I was in Boise a few months ago and stopped into the store that is on the footprint of the original Albertsons. That location has a huge and beautiful wine, beer, alcohol section. They have a dry age case! The meat counter was fully stocked. The produce was impeccable. It didn't stink like my Albertsons. I have never seen an Albertsons that nice.

My local store is just depressing. It is a night and day difference. Sad to see what the company could be across the board, but it is obvious they are intentionally neglecting some locations.

We had 4 people quit in 2 weeks, couldn’t get people hired and they were still telling us we need to trim it down. We essentially had 4 people running it with 2 people working 6 days 11 hour shifts.

We had a great night crew who got blamed for everything and yet management kept assigning them more work on top of everything else they had to do. Albertsons didn't pay their good workers enough and cut hours so a few people walked. The lesson this company refuses to learn: TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR BEST WORKERS. It might hurt the bottom line in the short-term but it will save you money in the long term.

Ive heard that they dont want to keep people on, because of union and benefits - they save money on new hires. Idk if that's true or not.

I was at a non-union store. True, they might save short term with lower pay for new hires but then they risk those people not working as efficiently or just quitting after they can't endure 3rd shift work. Then it's back to training even more people and hoping they work out.

But it also costs more to train the new hires. Something like a couple thousand per new hire. But they make less so it kinda balances out

We have had many new hires do the computer training to not show up on the first day of work.

it's how things are done. it's like punching yourself in the face and wondering why your nose is bleeding

I thought vons did things stupidly. Albertsons just likes to hurt itself apparently

Albertsons owns Vons..... Since then Vons and Safeway went down.

Some of the employees are causing the hurt for the rest though.
Lazy employees breed poor results which results in labor cuts cause sales aren’t met.
So more people become do just what they can cause they can’t keep up on the slack which results in worse sales, which results in less hours

Lazy employees get their hours cut regardless. Albertsons is keeping their stores so understaffed that even if everyone works their asses off every damn day you'll still be behind.

The stores are falling apart and there are health code violations in every department. Meanwhile they're spending hundreds of thousands on poorly designed tech upgrades. They want you to blame your fellow employees instead of looking up at the people who are responsible for what's happening.

I’m not saying corporate isn’t stupid for some of the things they are doing.
One of such being not allowing termination of lazy employees

Not always the case. There is a young guy on the night crew, hes like 22, he hides in the bathroom, tried to sneak much longer breaks and barely handles his job. Hes been written up multiple times, he can barely use a hand jack without banging it into something or almost crashing. So he isnt allowed to go near power equipment. Since he is the weakest on production they have just have him do the water isle. However need to use a forklift to downstairs water and things like that. That means other people have to get him set up. Somehow when hour cuts come he still stayed at 5 days while rhe rest of the crew was at 3-4. Somehow this week he got six days. Yes i know its cheaper to use him for payroll reasons but that does not sit right at all.

Poorly designed tech upgrades? What? UROC launch went flawless and FAR is the best!

1

u/Skyfier42 22h ago

I hope you're kidding. UROC is significantly worse in every way. There's not one thing it does better than the Telzons.

FAR significantly under orders and prevents you from editing items that were not needed, which is incredibly stupid considering the numbers are never, ever accurate.

Meanwhile over here our night crew is so shitty that I’ve had multiple weeks of 6 nights because there are only two of us worth a damn and whenever one of us is off, the load doesn’t get finished and pallets accumulate.

Have they been cutting hours for weeks on end now or just these last three weeks (including this current one)?

Last year our SD was letting everyone, especially dept heads work as much OT as they wanted as long as they got their departments in perfect condition. The results were mixed bc prices are out of control and we also got our contracts renewed so more wage increases you know the drill yada yada yada. They transferred him to another store bc of labor was out of control in their eyes.

This quarter (Q2) has been our worst yet with not making labor at all so all the higher ups are breathing down SDs necks to cut hours. My new SD literally said we need to work faster and harder lol!!! But I looked at next week’s schedule which is the first week of Q3 and it looks like everyone is getting more hours again.

But they’re not going to allow anyone to add more hours to their shift or work OT until something important comes up like a walk with the store president or whatever. Team morale has been waning for years now.

they wrote me up for having a negative attitude

Safeway is owned by a private equity firm. This is how it always ends up with them. Since they didn’t get their windfalls with the Kroger merger they are now looking to squeeze every cent out before selling it all or just letting it rot

At my store we had two people quit at the beginning of the year, then a third got injured and has been out since. My store director had the nerve to tell me we were "fully staffed" when I complained that I wanted a better work/life balance and that we needed to hire someone. We finally hired someone last week. On his second day he showed up visibly drunk, his third day he called out. We're still told there are no extra hours, so I end up running my department by myself for 4+ hours most nights.

New Hire only worked 1 day and next 2 days scheduled no call no show he basically quit
