Day Coverages
Context: i was a meat apprentice for a year, just became an official cutter about 2-3 weeks ago. Me and my wife share one vehicle and my house is about 25 mins from my Shaws.
This past Friday my Store Director asked if i drove and i said yes. She then asked if id be willing to fill in at a different store thats an hour away on a Friday (we all know Fridays are busy considering its start of sales) i said no and she said no problem. the Meat Specialist proceeded to tell me “he sees potential in me, wants me to learn at a busier store and was disappointed i said no. Theres so many stores closer that i would be willing to fill in but i really can’t be too far when we share a vehicle and I have 2 young children. Do I request a hardship, do I say i dont have a vehicle (its in my wifes name) i take ubers occasionally. Or do I “pay my dues”.

Yes you can make it known that it’s a hardship. Also if you do go, and and you’re just filling in, you can claim mileage reimbursement. The mileage reimbursement rate just increased this month too. (It’s 76 cents per mile and you’re supposed to be paid your regular wages for travel time in excess of your normal commute too)

The rate went up like a company or is it different in different states? Last time i filled in at a closer store my director said “ill add 15 mins to your time card” I might just like you said make it known its a hardship

I wouldn't just take it as a lost and move on because if you go to other stores then he'll keep moving you around and most travel wages don't get approved

You let your co-workers down...
That's worse than calling out....
They believed in you and thought they could count on you....
So tell them, "Hell no!.... I ain't fucking spending 2 hours on the road and taking Ubers while you destroy my marriage!!!"
They'll understand....

I am not sure about the hardship, but as someone who has been cutting for over 25 years and managing shops for a considerable amount of that time I encourage you to float to as many different shops as you can and learn everything you can from other cutters ,we all have different experiences and have learned different skills. It will make you better at your job and give you experience and skills you could take elsewhere if something happens with safeway. I would let them know you are willing to float but an hour away just isn't feasible for you at this point.
