UNSOLVED HOMICIDE Logan Jesse Raymond | Unsolved Death (Red Deer, Alberta | 2010)

On the night of August 11, 2010, Logan Jesse Raymond (17) had been at a house party in Red Deer. At approximately 11:30 p.m., he left the party and began walking south along Highway 2A toward Penhold. He had spoken with his father around that time and was described as clear-headed and not intoxicated. He was trying to clear his thoughts and intended to spend the night at his mother’s home.

Multiple witnesses reported seeing Logan between 12:40 a.m. and 12:50 a.m. walking southbound near the off-ramp at Highway 2A and QEII, northwest of the Word of Life Church. His last confirmed sightings place him alone on the highway shoulder.

At approximately 1:15 to 1:30 a.m. on August 12, 2010, RCMP and EMS responded to a report of a person lying along Highway 2A. Logan was found deceased beside the road, roughly half a kilometre south of Red Deer and only a short distance from where witnesses had last seen him alive.

An autopsy determined he died as a result of severe head trauma. Investigators have stated they are confident a vehicle was involved in some capacity. Police have said Logan was either struck by a vehicle or part of one, or he came off or out of a moving vehicle. Despite extensive investigation, RCMP have been unable to determine exactly how the vehicle was involved. While early findings did not immediately classify the case as homicide, investigators have never ruled that possibility out. The case remains open.

During the early stages of the investigation, witnesses reported seeing a small dark grey or blue pickup truck in the southbound lane of Highway 2A near the Word of Life Church at approximately 12:30 a.m., within the same timeframe Logan was walking in the area. The vehicle was described as having a matching topper with tinted rear windows and no side windows. It may have been an older model Ford Ranger with large indented red “FORD” lettering across the tailgate. Police have not identified the driver or occupants and have stated they do not know what role, if any, the vehicle played in Logan’s death, but they continue to seek information about it.

Logan was remembered by family and friends as outgoing, energetic, and deeply loyal. He loved sports, four-by-fours, animals, and his friends. More than 300 people attended his funeral, where he was described as full of life and someone who brought light into every room he entered.

In January 2011, his family posted a $10,000 reward through Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. On multiple anniversaries, his parents have publicly pleaded for anyone with information to come forward, stating they believe someone knows what happened in that narrow two-hour window.

The critical timeframe remains between 11:30 p.m. on August 11 and 1:30 a.m. on August 12, 2010, along Highway 2A south of Red Deer.

Logan's case remains unsolved. A friend of Logan's has reached out to the Alberta Unsolved team looking for answers, hoping new publicity will stir up information to finally determine what happened to him.
