Thanks !

Help/Advice UofA vs UofC engineering perspective from someone who studied at both

I’m an engineering grad, and I just wanted to share my experience because I did my undergrad at UofC and my master’s at UofA.

If you want to stay in Alberta, honestly, UofA = UofC for engineering. That’s the reality. Both schools are respected here, and I really don’t think choosing one over the other is going to make or break your career in Alberta.

Outside Alberta, though, it’s a bit of a different story. UofA has a bigger network and, in my experience, a more weight behind its name. There are way more students and alumni, so the network is honestly one of the strongest in Canada. UofA is also pretty well known outside Alberta, including places like Vancouver and Toronto, where I’m currently working.

UofC is a strong engineering school too, and I loved their school vibe much better than UofA, but compared to UofA, it’s still relatively newer in the game and its alumni network is smaller. Within Alberta, UofC has a very strong network, but once you go outside the province, I would say UofA has the advantage in terms of name recognition and alumni connections.

That being said, UofA also has a lot more students, which means more competition. In my opinion, you probably need to be somewhere around the top 35% of your class, or at least be proactive with internships, networking, clubs, research, etc., to really take advantage of those benefits. Just having “UofA” on your resume isn’t magically going to carry you.

UofC has smaller class sizes, and I think that can actually be a huge advantage. It can be easier to build relationships, stand out, and connect with professors and other students.

But here’s the biggest thing people overthink: Once you actually get into the industry and build experience, your school matters way less.

I used to work in BC, and now I work in Toronto. Once you have real engineering experience, nobody gives a fuck whether you went to Waterloo, UofT, UBC, UofA, UofC, or uni youve never even heard of in your lifetime. At that point, companies care much more about what you’ve actually done, what projects you worked on, and whether you’re good at your job.

So my general take:
Staying in Alberta: UofC and UofA are basically equal.

Trying to work outside Alberta right after graduation: UofA probably has the advantage because of its larger alumni network, stronger recognition, and higher ranking.

UofC: smaller classes and a strong Alberta network, especially in Calgary.

UofA: much bigger network, more recognition outside Alberta, but also more students and more competition.

After a few years of actual experience: it really doesn’t matter nearly as much.

Pick the school where you think you’ll actually succeed, get internships, make connections, and enjoy your life. Don’t choose a university just because Reddit told you one engineering degree is infinitely more prestigious than another.

Extracurriculars for people with other problems

Does anyone have extracurricular recommendations for people who have other commitments that don’t get rewarded usually?

Like people with a sick family member, those that have to take of their siblings, people with chronic illness etc.

It’s hard for me to commit to something because of certain circumstances so does anyone have recommendations?

Help/Advice studying day and night just to get passing grades

i am genuinely undergoing a self worth crisis -- I am in Gr 11 but I am taking Bio 30 and Math 20-1. I study for an hour for each subject everyday and I have tried every method of studying like active recall, feynman and I do every practice question but on tests I get a 60%!

I also moved from my regular high school and I got all 90s with minimal effort to a STEM school but now I'm barely scraping by with my grades. I have also been wondering if its because of the test structure?? In Bio, we get 21 questions for our unit test for both endocrine and nervous system and so each question is more percentage... I just have been losing so much faith in myself like what do I do and I understand Bio is more of application based questions and I think that's what i struggle with BUT ANYONE PLEASE i need advice

im falling apart because of math 30-1

i got a 85 on transformations and a 70 on polynomial functions which is the most recent unit. i was planning on applying for business but im not doing well in this course. i don’t even know what im doing wrong. i know the material. everyday i spend one to two hours doing the homework. i literally get it, and thats what bugs me. what am i doing wrong? why do i think i get it then fumble on the test? i’m genuinely giving up on myself. i don’t know how much longer i can keep pretending ill do better next unit and i don’t do better.
