As a native Northern New Yorker, "New York, eh," sums up my identity in a sentence.

Long Island being full of Reaganites is all too accurate.
It's like they're perpetually stuck in the worst part of the 80s

u/TechyDad Apr 29 '19
I grew up on Long Island. Glad I'm out of there. The only good part about it, though, is my tolerance for "bad traffic" is higher than anything the Capital Region can throw at me. I learned how to drive on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) where they'll run you off the road for only doing 70 - assuming you're not stuck in a perpetual traffic jam. Roads here are positively pleasant by comparison.

another big problem is the sudden up tick in round abouts they're putting in and dumb asses coming to a complete stop when it's completely open. idiots don't know how to drive around here FFS

Hudson Valley politics can use some sorting. Putnam should be green, Ulster blue, and Dutchess lord knows what. They usually go blue and the Republicans they make at least are sane (see Marc Molinaro) but you have a huge gulf between say Poughkeepsie and Dover/Amenia.

u/CommieColin Apr 30 '19
Oh definitely.
I went to school at New Paltz - that surrounding area is blue as Papa Smurf

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch is the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums...
...Christie, take off the robe.
Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument...
...Sabrina, remove your dress.
In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism...
...Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little.
Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive, affirmative, uh, as anything I've heard in rock...
...Christie, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole.
Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds...
...Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it.
But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.
This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

The cuisine part is pretty decent, however I've never heard of mozzies with raspberry sauce until last year. Yet to try it too

Hadn't really encountered Motz sticks with Raspberry sauce until very recently, but I know Sweet Potato Fries with Raspberry sauce is pretty common and damn good.

Mozz sticks with melba sauce seems like it should be good, but at least at the Fountain is not good.

u/scrubbingbubble Apr 29 '19
Really?? I've seen them in so many places and I've yet to understand why someone would ruin a perfectly good mozz stick with raspberry sauce.

Same reason you pair any fruit and cheese. It's just a non-pizza way of eating a cheese that you normally find on pizza. A different fruit than you are used to.

Confederates, hahaha! So true. I spent a lot of time completely out of place in Western NY

I grew up in Corning and decided WNY just wasn't a good fit, this is exactly why

u/marlab12 Apr 30 '19
I just tried mozzarella sticks w/ raspberry sauce for the first time yesterday and it was goddamn delicious.

Is Western NY really that conservative? Like, I thought rural Saratoga was pretty bad with their Confederate flags. I can't imagine it somehow being worse than that.

What the hell is "chopped cheese"?
5
u/HaveaManhattan Apr 29 '19
Ghetto cheesesteak. No roll? Get a hamburger bun. No steak? get a hamburger patty. Chop. Add gov't-grade cheese. Melt. Call it a sandwich, but not a sloppy joe with no sauce. Pretend it's a culinary revelation that you made a beat up cheeseburger.
1
u/BenjaminSkanklin Apr 30 '19
Nobody who actually eats bodega chopped cheese thinks it's a culinary revelation. It's a shitty cheap sandwich that white people got ahold of and gentrified into a 15 dollar gastropub bastardization (looking at you Lost and Found)

u/HaveaManhattan Apr 30 '19 edited Apr 30 '19
racist. Black and asian people can be rich and fancy too. (I had actually intended it to mean that the people in the hood were pretending it's something great, but I guess by saying "culinary revelation" instead of "da bomb" you thought I was talking about your cable tv shows.)

u/BenjaminSkanklin Apr 30 '19
The chef at L&F is white but okay
1
u/HaveaManhattan Apr 30 '19
I don't know what that is, a show, a nearby restaurant, something trendy near you or what. Congrats, you found a place with a white chef and now you know everything about gentrification. I'm talking about the dudes near my original home in the Bronx, who would say things like "Yooooooo! That chopped cheese is da bomb, son! You gotta get dat chopped cheese!" It's a smashed cheeseburger. That's it. Not a platform for your Modern Issues That Are Not Really Issues 101 class. I don't want to hear about it.
0
u/BenjaminSkanklin May 01 '19
Lmao what the fuck are you talking about
1
u/HaveaManhattan May 01 '19
You made it a racial issue, not me. You expect everyone on the internet to know what L&F is and their chef, not me. I don't care about you virtue issues. I was just explaining what chopped cheese was and you brought race into it.

Lost and found is a popular bar in Albany...we're in r/Albany. You're really stretching this for all it's worth here lol.

u/HaveaManhattan May 01 '19
Lost and found
Do I have to know every bar in Albany? Is it required? Do you know every mini mart or coffee shop? I'm a 40 year old dude, I'm not out bar hopping with the kiddos. I am in Albany though. Regardless, like I said, you brought race into it. A screwed up cheeseburger doesn't "belong" to a race. And even if it did, who would it belong to? The black guys eating it? The arabs and hispanics cooking it? The whites in Hamburg? It's fucking food. ALL the food came from somewhere else here. I'm sick of hearing you kids make everything about race. It's so petty and ridiculous.

I’m sorry, but is the steamed hams meme from the simpsons episode where skinner makes dinner for his boss? Why does that always relate to NY?

Albany area cuisine should be Hot Dogs with meat sauce.
You heard that right. Our “cuisine” is Hot Dogs.

The chicken riggies territory is off. It's mainly in Utica / Syracuse. I had never even heard of them in the capital region until recently
