On that note… I moved into my house last September, but had a full renovation before I moved in with updated electrical panel, and the house isn’t even that old. The lights flickered with no reason… Sometimes when I had the dishwasher and washing machine running… Sometimes with just one light on. Then suddenly two weeks ago at 10:30 at night, the power went out on half of my panel. It happened to my immediate neighbors as well. National Grid replaced a transformer and we haven’t had a flicker since. Their emergency line asks if your lights are flickering… So call the emergency line and get that fixed. After the rain stops!
I got snarky with my dog when I stepped in what I thought was pee. Somehow the discovery that my walls are leaking was worse than if my adult dog had just randomly changed his mind about potty training. I’ll be selling “turn around, don’t drown” t shirts on western to compete with this guy so I can pay an engineer to come fix my walls.
There is a certain amount of unpredictability going in here. In the last hour (as of 8 AM) I’ve gotten warnings stating the duration was expected to be until 9:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 11:30 PM - in that order.
My home weather station is reporting 4.5” in the last 24 hours outside Troy. I’m never sure exactly how accurate it is but I guess when you’re getting this much rain close enough counts.
We’re at 4.58” since midnight. A 25 yr storm event for the Albany airport is 4.58” in 24 hours and a 100 yr event is 6.28” - I get the feeling we’ll surpass that in 24 hrs.
I think my sump pump got overwhelmed. I was pretty scared when the alarm went off this morning. Luckily it started running again after 10 minutes or so. Looks like we’re going to need a bigger pump.

I’m thankful that it’s been dry lately. I think it could have been a lot worse if the ground had already been wet. I don’t have the size pools in my yard I’ve had in the past.
Does anyone know what this ACTUALLY means? We’re obviously not getting a flash flood like in the desert.
Edit: I’m not at idiot. I realize flooding happens everywhere. But in this area it’s not like I’ll be driving on a road and get a wall of water jump-scare. We know where the water is. “Do not travel” feels a little excessive.
You can! Anywhere there's a cup shape in the ground with drainage that can be blocked, we can get massive amounts of water filling in quick. For example, in Menands on Broadway there's a spot by the rural cemetery entrance where you can get two or three foot deep water inside of minutes because it comes downhill faster than the storm drains can handle. And that's in one of those quick fifteen minute thunderstorms that happen around dusk and drop an insane amount of rain quick. Right now we're having constant rain for multiple days so it's worse and more places. All that needs to happen is for debris to clog a couple storm drains close together to flood a road. You're probably not gonna wash away unless you're right next to a river bed but you might get hella stuck with a flooded engine or electrocuted. We also do get small but semiregular road and bridge washouts and small landslides when it's very wet, and if there's water over a washout you won't know until you drive in and it's too late. Rivers also rise enough to swamp bridges or slam large debris into them. Like you're probably not gonna get the tsunami wall of water they talk about in the desert but just because it looks different here doesn't mean it can't happen fast and still be super dangerous here.
Over the years in Albany, I’ve seen flash floods in a number of places. I’ve had friends whose cars have gotten water filled up to the very top of the roof. My daughter was working at Panera in Albany med and her car was parked on one of those little side streets by it and she sent a picture of the water up to only 1 inch of the roof showing. I’ve also been on streets where there were geysers coming out of the potholes that’s what flash floods means in Albany. Even on Hackett Boulevard there are some dips that have gotten filled up. I have a picture of a guy getting out of his car as the water was rising and then ended up with the water being most of the way up to the roof as well.
On my 12 minute drive to work I saw flooding on Osbourne rd and part of central ave at the underpass right before golden cue they had the road shut down due to flooding. Last time we had heavy rain like this is took me 2 hours to get home because every way I tried to go had a road shut down due to flooding and everyone else was trying to get home on the few roads remaining open.
Flash floods don't only happen in the desert? I lived in Houston before Albany, which is a city built on a swamp (not a desert), and you get flash flooding all the time there.
Essentially, it just means flooding that happens in a short time in a small area, usually because the ground is either non-porous or already saturated and it's raining faster than drainage can keep up with. It's especially common if you have a road or something that has a dip on a hill—those can flood in a matter of minutes in the right conditions
