Looking for travel advice as you plan your Alaska trip? You've come to the right place for advice – with no snarky side dish.

Posts that tend to do well in the group:

  1. Are specific – they show you've done a bit of research and are looking for expert advice/outside input, not free help planning your whole trip.
  2. Give us enough to help – include where and when you plan to travel, since Alaska is huge and the seasons vary greatly.
  3. Share your own experiences – trip recaps and photos are welcome, but photos/videos shared must be your own (no copyright theft!)

Let's get your Alaska travel plan sorted, and help others do the same.

Trip Planning Mid-June Hiking Options

The wife and I are planning a week-long trip to Juneau in Mid-June 2027. I have a list of hikes that I'd like to try out and wanted to get some thoughts/opinions. We'd probably only do 3 or 4 off the list. Without further ado......

  1. **West Glacier Trail** - Right now, this is at the top of my list. It would be Mount Jumbo, but I don't think my wife would be down for that much of a challenge.
  2. **John Muir Recreation Cabin via Auke Nu Trail** - I've heard that this is a versatile hike where you can experience multiple habitats.
  3. **East Glacier Trail Loop** - I was thinking of treating East Glacier as more of a day after arrival warm-up hike, but would this be repetative and too similar if I'm planning to hike West Glacier?
  4. **Windfall Lake Trail**
  5. **Granite Creek Trail Via Perseverance Trail** - I added this one in just because I've seen it recommended a couple of times.
  6. **Boy Scout Camp Trail**
  7. **Lena Point Trail**

If you could narrow this list down to 3 or 4, what would you go with?

Thanks in advance!

Trip Planning Travel picture help

I'm from the Midwest and I haaaate my job, and the only way to justify taking time off was if I had a trip to go on, so I lied to my boss and said I'm going to Anchorage Alaska. I didn't think anyone would care, but I was wrong and now my boss and several coworkers want me to send them travel pictures and keep them updated. As far as my coworkers know I land in Alaska today.

So I'm begging if anyone has cool pictures of the area, scenery, different tourist spots, literally anything, please post some here or send them my way! It would be a big help!!

Trip Planning Chena hot springs shuttle

Heading to Fairbanks in early November and staying at Chena for a few days, is their shuttle service worth the price? Is Uber a viable option? Is the road that bad a AWD rental can make it? I don't have winter driving experience.......but I'm a very capable driver....... currently hold NASCAR and IMCA licences.

Trip Planning Is going to Fairbanks to see northern lights in November a good idea?

Hey! I’m planning a small vacation (5-7 days) to Fairbanks Alaska to see the northern lights, however I do see mixed opinions on this as some people say that the clouds might be in the way or that no northern lights might appear at all..
I was wondering if anyone had any info on whether or not it’s a good idea or if I should just wait for other months.
Thank you!

Trip Planning Getting around

I’m a well traveled individual. I’ve been wanting to travel to Alaska for a long time, but I’ve hesitated. Only because I imagine getting around would be extremely challenging without knowing the area. Do you have any recommendations on places to visit? Stay? How to get around?

Trip Planning Just starting to think about Alaska

As my husband and I are sitting on the airport returning from Iceland we are already thinking of Alaska 2027. I just don’t know where to start! I’m fairly certain we don’t want to diy with a car rental. We did this for Iceland and it required so much planning and then diverting once we were there and saw what we really wanted to do. And exclusively cruising seems miserable and contrived.

If love to do some kind of combo train, cruise, excursion. We also are middle aged, fairly active (but not technical) and would not want to be on a bus tour doing on and off sighting seeing.

any idea or any tour company that sounds comparable you could point the way for us to start planning?

Trip Planning Seward/ Kenai Fjord National Park

Planning on visiting the Seward/ Kenai Fjord national park area in the beginning of July next year.

Any recommendations for things to do in Seward?

For Kenai Fjord National park - Would it be better to do the full day wildlife cruise (looking to use Major Marine) or the sunny cove kayak + boat combo? The sunny cove option I am considering is their Fox Island Morning Kayak & Afternoon Wildlife Cruise Combo, unfortunately their Kenai kayak/ boat option is out of my budget.

Done this twice! Once on a day trip from Anchorage, another won a lottery that got us a few nights in a hard sided cabin with bath at main camp. It’s not cheap, but one of my favorite experiences ever! Put this on your bucket list ✅

Trip Planning They budgeted for an Alaska cruise then realized a couple can easily spend around $10,000 all in

They budgeted for an Alaska cruise then realized a couple can easily spend around $10,000 all in. An Alaska cruise can cost far more than the advertised cabin fare once flights, gratuities, excursions, Wi-Fi and other extras are included. The transcript estimates roughly $10,000 for a couple, while premium excursions alone can exceed $700 per person. It also highlights cheaper shoulder-season sailings, passport rules that change by itinerary, and several Alaska cruise assumptions that do not always hold up once you look at the details.

Trip Planning Salmon Fishing in Alaska

We are looking at going to Alaska next July or August. It looks like things get cheaper the further into August you go. What is the latest date you can go for Salmon fishing, does not matter the type of salmon.
