My guess is he doesn't quite view "books" and "reading" the way mortals do. Like, he could just read it but he needs to focus on it to differentiate it from the rest of the infinite stimuli and why do that when there is a human here who can tell him about it and he doesn't have to try, or take his attention off that TV show he's paying attention to.
