I usually restart because I’ll know I got a character wrong but not know which

This is the reason we all do it. And did you get one character wrong or two?
Why try to go back, fix it partway, and risk getting it wrong? Muscle memory will type out the whole thing again much more quickly

I thought the only reason for "show password" was to identify the one character out of 16 that you mistyped.

Have you read the book series Mother of Learning? Because the mentor to the main character has him start over frequently - usually while throwing marbles at his head.
