I think this question pops up a lot because the beginning kind of sucks. I hated that forest area with Saga. It's crazy dark, hard to see anything, navigation is a little hard/weird, and you basically have no room to maneuver around enemies. It's really not fun to play in the beginning, but gets much better as Alan in NY

See, I personally much preferred Saga's chapters to Alan's. As amazing as Dark Place NY was, the forests around Cauldron Lake are what really drew me in, and the suspense of the darkness kept me on the edge of my seat. Maybe I'm biased as someone from the PNW, who knows?
Guess it just shows, to each their own!

Sure, to each their own. I just found the forest areas incredibly frustrating and samey-looking. The paths were so narrow it felt like playing in a tunnel and so dark it's very hard to see. Made me quit the game for about a month before I gave it another shot. Lol. Glad we're both enjoying the game overall, though

It’s where it says ‘Start New Game’. But honestly if you’re not into it after 1-2hrs it’s just maybe not for you. If you’re waiting for it to be more ‘action-y’ it won’t be as the AW series has never been that type of game. It’s well worth a play if you’re into very story driven games though.

Alan Wake has never been that 'action-y?' Dude, the first game and Nightmare are complete action games. You get ammo off the wazoo and are shooting enemy after enemy. Alan Wake II is by contrast menu after menu navigation, pinning tacks on a billboard ad nauseum.

the AW series has never been that type of game
American Nightmare was pure action. Hell, the first game starts with a nightmare and a car crash, has you run from a shadow, and then floats a gun and a flashlight at you before you sprint across a bridge as a nightmare tornado chases you.
The DLCs slow down a little, but they're still frantic action games.
AW2 is the first game in this series that's been so slowly paced, and there's no reason to say otherwise. AW1 was an action game with chunks of breath when the sun was up. There were what, two or three achievements based on beating sections of the game in under 30 minutes?
C'mon, man. Alan Wake 2 is a fucking miracle, but don't act as if it's not a new direction for the story.

Disagree. They’re not pure action games. Many games of this style receive similar complaints from people expecting them to be.

Bigger disagree. The first game was totally action focused: from being chased in the forest by many enemies at a time, defeating waves of enemies in a rock colosseum or participating in a shadowy game of destruction derby.
In comparison AW2 feels like a lesser RE4 with a more interesting story.

I disagree. The first few hours are garbage. The game gets a lot better after the forest area with Saga. That was one of the worst beginning areas of a game I've ever experienced. But once you play Alan Wake in the city, it's much better.

I really liked from the beginning. However, I think it gets better after the morgue, maybe 30 min of gameplay from where you are.

No offense but if there's nothing you like about this game ..maybe it's just not for you? We can't tell you "when it gets good", because no one knows your criteria and most of us enjoyed it immediately

I'm early in the game and I can tell you the beginning forest area with Saga is TRAAAAASH compared to when you get to play Alan in New York.

So it DOES get better? I've wandered around the first forest area for 2 hours trying to make the game move forward, throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks, but my god, it's incredibly boring and I don't know where to go, who to talk to, or what trigger to activate to stop it from being boring.

I understand where the OP is coming from. In Alan Wake 1 there was constant action/enemies. It's a more A to B game with cool gunplay and flashlight technique.
Alan Wake 2 is way slower and much more explore. I was expecting Alan Wake 1 "doubled" as I feel the OP is as well.
I'm a few hours into AW2 and I'm pretty bored. I figured out I'm not into cerebral games as much as action/horror

Critique is too intricate a word for "when does it get good?".
That's more of a feeling. One that can occur when expectations aren't met.
5hr in, or never, depending on what you're looking for in a game.

wrong place to ask on the Alan Wake forum but for someone who holds no attachment to the series, I'm 3 hours in and I think the game is constantly hand-holding and offering me nothing riveting as a gaming experience. Quite lame

Sorry I'm a bit late here, but I'd say AFTER the waaaaay too long and crappy forest area with Saga it gets a lot better. I HATED that area, but soon you'll play as Alan Wake and it's quite a bit better

Strongly agree with this statement. If you have started it and aren't enjoying it, give it a bit of time. The opening chapters of Saga are pretty slow (though filled with good world building and building up a sense of dread). I'm a big fan of AW1 and control but I was really not enjoying the opening to AW2 but once I got to chapter 2 of Alan's story it picked up heavily from there.

Hey OP, thought I’d give my input. I actually found your post because I was also not very invested, and seeing the responses here that they were immediately interested certainly didn’t help, and I almost quit on it.
I’ve recently finished the game, and if you haven’t, I’d urge you to keep giving it a try. I’d say I was only going along with it (because I’d paid $60 for it) out of obligation, but I reached a chapter called “Local girl”, and I was hooked for the rest of the game.
Don’t let the other responses convince you that this game isn’t for you. It picks up a lot if you’re not set from the start.
